United Jewish Appeal Launched Here With Pledges of $1,020,000 The United Jewish Appeal was launched here last night with mem bers of Washington Jewry pledging a total of $1,0%),000 towards the District goal of $2,500,000. The 1948 goal for the entire Na tion is $250,000,000. Henry Morgenthau, jr., former Secretary of the Treasury and now national chairman of the appeal, and Bartley C. Crum, member of the Anglo-American Inquiry Com mission on Palestine, spoke at the Hotel statler event which was at tended by more than 400 persons. At a similar dinner last year, over $700,000 was raised. The funds from the campaign will be used for relief and rehabilitation of European Jews, for immigration and reception in Palestine of 75,000 homeless Jews, including 24,000 chil dren, and for reception and care of refugees who will enter the United States in 1948. Solicitation Starts Soon. Washington mass solicitation will start as soon as drive divisions are organized in the next few weeks. OfflcialS| said they hope to recruit 3,000 or more volunteers. Other large gifts also will be raised at a series of functions, for ' different trades and professions and among Government workers. About 15,000 individual persons contributed dur ing 1947’s drive. Mr. Morgenthau said the problem of looking after, and keeping alive the Jews of Europe and Palestine is a problem for the world and the United Nations. "With such leaders as you have here,” he told the group. Referring to the Palestine situa tion, Mr. Crum declared: “The United Jewish Appeal drive, this year * * * will be -the strongest notification given to the United States and Britain to stop playing power politics, stop playing with oil. and instead think of human beings.” Rabbi Norman Gerstenfeld as serted that “we stand united this evening as Americans of Jewish faith and rising to a common re sponsibility.” Co-chairman of the local drive are Rabbi Gerstenfeld, Rabbi Isadora Breslau and Joseph Chemer, who also spoke. Simms Invited to Join National Health Parley Inspector Joseph S. Simms of the Health Department's Bureau of Food Inspection has been invited to appear at the Nation-wide con ference on public health problems. The conference is sponsored by the School of Public Health, Uni versity of Michigan, and is under the direction of Dr. Henry Vaughn dean and former health commis sioner of Detroit.
