The "double” of the Civil War 1 President, Abraham Lincoln Hite, 62, of Bellefonte, Pa., arrived yes terday to visit the fete and prom ised he would appear in the costume of the 1860s. After registering at the Willard Hotel, Mr. Hite stood on the first (floor balcony on the Pennsylvania avenue side of the building. Mr. Lincoln, himself, viewed his inau | gural parade in 1861 from a balcony ' on this site, when an earlier Willard I Hotel existed. Mr. Hite just wanted to see how it felt. He is a bricklayer, tile-setter and ! stone mason at Pennsylvania State College. He decided to stay at the Willard because of its association with President Lincoln. Mr. Hite began to take on the 1 “hobby” of being like President Lincoln about 1939, when people started to comment on his close likeness to the late President. I “Even my barber called me Abe, and suggested that, like President Lincoln, I never should get my hair cut,” Mr. Hite explained. And so he began to assume the character— beaver hat, somber clothes and all. Center Hall School, seven miles from Bellefonte, sent Mr. Hite here to view the blossoms, which he has never seen before. The school is. very close to his heart. During four months in 1942, the children there bought $5,000 worth of war savings stamps from him, to get the chance to talk to "Old Abe.” Then he traveled to 74 schools in Center County, Pennsylvania, selling the war stamps. The circuit took four months, and every day Mr. Hite was helping the war effort. He sold $300,000 worth in all, receiv ing official recognition for his achievement from the Treasury Department. "Those kids spaded gardens and did anything else to earn a dime to buy a stamp,” he explained. He has a way with children, par ticularly Sandy, 4, and Sherry, 8. They are the son and daughter of Douglas A. Stalker, general manager of the Willard, and Mrs. Stalker. When Mr. Hite entered the man ager’s suite, the children politely greeted him with "Hello, Mr. Lincoln." But a few minutes later, they were crawling onto his knees and OPEN TODAY and SUNDAY UNTIL 6 P.M.
