Here is a simple ruie expressea in
simple language:
Do not use “like” for “as,” “as if”
or "as though.” If either “as,” "as
if” or “as though” makes sense, do
not use "like.” Otherwise "like” will
be correct.
Examples (“like” used incorrectly).
“It looks like it will rain.” Since
either “as if” or “as though' makes
sense, "like” is incorrect. Right:
It looks as if (as though) it will
rain.
“I hope to succeed like you have.”
In this sentence "as” makes sense.
Therefore: I hope to succeed as
you have.
“I feel like I had slept for days.”
Either “as if” or “as though" makes
sense. Therefore: I feel as if (as
though) I had slept for days.
Examples (“like” used correctly).
I hope to be like my father.
Neither “as,” “as if” nor "as though”
makes sense. “Like” is correct.
For the same reason these sen
tences are correct:
She is like her mother.
I plan to furnish my house like
yours.
I feel like taking a walk.
It looks like a good idea.
She looks like a different person.

In the eyes of this observer Sidney ;
Sllodor of Philadelphia ranks with
the great tournament players of all
time. My observation has been at
close range, for during the past '
decade it has been my good fortune
to have Mr. Silodor as a partner in
numerous national and world cham
pionships. His name is inscribed on
every major trophy but one. The
one that has so far eluded him is
the trophy emblematic of the
Masters’ Individual championship,
but failure thus far to annex thia
title cannot be attributed to his
lack of trying. In support of this
contention I cite today’s hand which
I played with him in the recent
Masters’ Individual in New York
City.
The auction is characteristic of so
many of the part-score battles in
match point play, where each deal '
is a separate contest. These fre- I
quently develop into out and out
dog fights, in which the war cry la

I sat South and made the routine 4
opening of one club. West’s vul
nerable overcall on such an anaemio
suit would be frowned upon in rub
ber bridge, but is not looked upon
with disfavor in match play. East
chose to bid a spade and I felt that
I had one more shot coming to me,
which I took in the form of a one
no-trump bid. West and North
passed and East decided not to re
tire from the battle, contesting with ,
a bid of two hearts. If It is your,

merely the reporter in the case and
you may have East's mailing ad- j
dress upon application This was 1
passed around to Sllodor in the
North position and his action at
this point would be unthinkable in
rubber bridge or in a contest with
total point scoring.
He calculated that the opposition
had deprived us of the privilege of
playing for the part score, at which
we could very likely have scored
more than 100 points (a bonus of
50 points is awarded in tournament
play for the fulfillment of a part
score contract) and the only way in
which we could be adequately com
pensated was to defeat the enemy at
a doubled contract which would
j yield 200 points.
My opening club bid, followed by a
I voluntary bid of one no-trump in
the face of partner's pass, had
! portrayed a strong hand and he
hoped I could garner four tricks.
He was reasonably sure he would
cash the queen of hearts and was
willing to gamble that the king of
diamonds would be a winner. If
my no-trump bid had about it the
least bit of poetic license I need not
stand for the double. However, my
hand was suitable for the purpose
and as you will observe there was
no way declarer could avoid the
loss of six tricks. The 200 points
yielded us a top score.
I don’t recommend this type of
double for home use. I merely
wanted you to see that flilodoi
really was trying.

Nature's Children
Desert Builder.

Nature’s children are always one
jump ahead of man. Centuries be
fore man had thought of building
barbed-wire entanglements to keep
captives in and foes out, the white
throated rats of the desert had per
fected a barricade about their cas
tle. Further, the thick walls of the
collected Cactuses are ample pro
tection against the intense rays of
the hot sun.
These builders wear clean, aoft
hair coats. Their black eyes are
large and friendly, their very long
whiskers twitch in an inquiring
fashion. There is none of the fur
tive, aggressive and obnoxious hab
its of the Norway rat present. Aa
pets they are interesting.
Travelers along desert roads are
always Intrigued by the mounds of
debris built up. Some of them are
5 feet high, usually located in the'’
very center of the branches of the
cholla cactus, fortress material bris
tling with sharp penetrating spines.
The builder cleverly handles the
prickly building material that man
could not have managed without
thick gloves and tools. The only
implements are sharp teeth and ca
pacious Jaws. To escape many foes
—skunks, bobcats, coyotes and
snakes—rats work at night. The
amount of material collected and
transported, not mentioning the
character of it, staggers the imagi
nation.
uespite me excellent protective
material, the builder i* not without
her troubles. It is not unusual to
see a frightened mother appear sud
denly on the roof of her home with
a limp baby in her mouth. Watch
a bit longer and you will gee the
long, sinewy form of the red racer
or whip snake, both extremely fond
of tender rat babies. If the nursery
has been located near a mesquite
tree, the mother, with whiskers all
a-tremble, runs up the trunk, plac
ing her Infant in a crotch. Then
she races down again to secure an
other baby. Working furiously, she
overlooks the other enemies whose
strong talons can lift her infant
with ease. Sometimes one infant
is grasped in her mouth and a wee
'■straphanger" holds on fast beneath.
The anxiety of the mother for the
welfare of her young marks every
move.
