1—12 THE EVENING STAR, Washington, D. C. _TUESDAY, API'l M, 1S4g. After Dark A Lipstick and Clenched Fist Principal Props of Entertainer I V\S ' He travels fastest, believes Senor Wences, who also travels light. A remarkably talented left fist and a great ability as a ventrilo quist are the Senor's stock in trade, A trade at which he is do ing very well. At present, he is one of several reasons why the rope is stretched very early across the entrance to the Statler's Embassy Room these nights, The other reasons? Dave Apol lon and his blonds, Emile Petti and his band. The Senor creates his own "dummy " with a few swift slashes with a lipstick and a couple of fast turns with a bit of charcoal. The result, a head drawn on his fist; it is. when joined by a small "body below and a wig above, the Senor's principal prop. After a rather slow beginning, his routine moves along at a lively clip. The "dummy"’ —Johnny smokes a cigarette, drinks from a glass and carries on a rapid con versation. A man's head in a box i* another part of the Senor’s act. This voice is strong and clear or muffled, depending on whether the box door is open or shut. The ven will entrance you. Here i« Hie perfect background for an evenings fun. N.W. * triloquist can make this voice in crease or decrease in volume as the door is closing. No small trick, that. The Senor is, on this bill, playing again with the man for whom he worked when first he came to this country, many years ago. Dave Apollon. , Dave has been on the stage since he was eight. He’s played a lot of mandolin since then. Feature of the act, df course, is Dave’s rather intense mandolin numbers. And he's very good, too. He's streamlined his act consid erably since a few years back, when he had a group of Filipinos backing him, and the routine was divided between music and comedy. Now it's all music, with only a pianist and harpist for background. Dave, who believes in changing your own act before the public changes it for you (ergo, by staying away in droves i, plans to revamp the present set-up soon. He would add a dancer, a girl singer, maybe a couple of comedy turns. In addition to giving the Senor his American start, he's toured with such present-day luminaries or semi-luminaries as Gil Lamb, Cass Daley, and Abbott and Costello in his troupe. His ambition is to collect a large revue about him, a sort of cross section of show business, and give a series of concerts. A hill-billy act, a dance team, comedians, acrobats —all these and more Dave would strum his mandolin in front of. If any one has a few odd musical jobs to be done, Les Williams, pianist-singer at the Old New Orleans, is the man to see. The poor guy’s practically out of work. All he can find to do is show up at the Old New Orleans five nights a week, present his own radio show on WOOK five days a week and run a thriving music school. On week ends, just to break up the sheer dullness of it all, he runs in an extra radio show, serves (as he has for 15 years) as Minister ol Music at the Goodwill Baptist Church, and dashes to New York for a couple of voice lessons himself Idle hands, etc. You won’t be in the minority oi doing anything unusual if you ask Les during one of his Old New Or leans sessions to play and sing, ‘ At Time Goes By.” He does it in th( manner of Dooley Wilson, of one picture (Casablanca) fame. The only thing missing is Ingrid Bergman slowly batting her eyee and murmuring, ‘‘Play it, Sam Play it." SOMETIMES we get just a bit upset over our engineers. A cautious bunch, their tendency toward understatement now and then lets us over look some mighty good bets. About all they wanted to say about their newr Hi-Poised power was that it went much further than anything else they knew toward controlling engine vibration frequencies. They let us say it would make engine sen sation “practically imperceptible.” That it w ould do away with a lot of shudder that often passes for clutch chatter. That it would “have an effect” on riding softness and quiet. • Well! Folks have now had a chance to try I out our ’48 beauties with Hi-Poised power — and you should hear what they say! “Sweetest ride of any car,” they tell us. “Such smoothness — it’s unbelievable!” “What have you done?—It’s wonderful!” W hat we did was apply a wholly new system of engine mounting. It’s a system that suspends the engine, much as in a cradle. This leaves it free to rock, bob or “wag its tail” (as every engine must) — yet maintains firm control of such move ' ment at all times and speeds. Add this to other things —big, soft tires on extra wide Safety-Ride rims; gentle coil springs on all four wheels; ample size and weight to master jounce and jitter — and what do you get? BU/CK alone has all these features .
