Pass 6 diamonds Pass Pass Double Pass Pass Pass Opening lead: King of clubs. We observed yesterday the case of the roadhog who constantly got into his partner’s way. He was a trying individual, but this must be said for him: While he was usually getting up front and clogging up traffic, if his partner wanted to get out and take the lead he would not deliberately push him off the road. The latter type we are dealing with today. He takes charge of all situ ations and partner’s opinions are given little if any weight. The 13 cards in his own hand are the only guides. The bidding atrocity is recorded above as it was actually perpetrated. South's opening bid of two diamonds will pass muster. With a reasonable break in trumps he holds a hand that is within oqe trick of game, and if he is lucky enough to find a few key cards in his partner’s hand a slam may be reached. West's bid of three cltibs is pointless in the extreme. In view of South’s an nouncement of great strength, the bid is little short of barking at the moon. It cannot impede the oppo nents and gives them the option of collecting a lucrative penalty If they stay awaae. , North’s double was from the heart and-should have resulted In a har vest of 1,400 points. South’s refusal to stand for the double shows the instinct of the “charge-taker” at their very height. He argued that he did not wish to miss a slam if there was one. This is unsound rea soning. I think it is reasonable for him to assume that his partner likes • slams just as much £ts he does, and if he thought there was any chance for slam he would not double the three club bid. Indeed, even if he thought there was only a game he would not be inclined to double the club bid unless he felt that it was worth while. South had a perfect hand for defense against clubs and should have been delighted to leave it in. When North did the next best thing and went to three no trump. South had overstayed the market ‘and should have rested there. His leap to six diamonds was not far removed from madness. He was defeated 800 points for a net swing of 2.200 points. While the trump break was un fortunate, it should not have been remote from contemplation. South might have taken soundings. From the circumstance that West, though vulnerable, was willing to undertaka a nine-trick contract against a de mand bid, it may be assumed that he is short in diamonds, and if North cannot suppx>rt the suit, which his double suggests, they can be expected to be stacked in the East hand. Where a player has painted a rea sonably accurate picture of his hold ings, it seems to me the better part of valor to abide by partner’s de cision. (Copyright, 1948. by Charlei H. Qoren.i Take My Word for It By Frank Colby Pet Speech Peeve. Mrs. M. L. McFadden of Pomeroy, Wash., will receive an autographed copy of my new Practical Handbook of Better English for this worth while contribution: f ‘‘This evening, on a radio round table forum on which onetime movie stars (of all people!) advise correspondents about their domes tic mixups, one of the ‘girls’ started to say ‘after all’ and Inadvertently I let the ‘afT slip out with a nice | fiat ‘a.’ However; she hastily checked herself and gave out with ‘I mean, I awfter all. * ♦ * And that's my pet speech peeve—people who make j themselves ridiculous by affecting I what they believe to be high-hat lingo. Incidentally, blessings on you I for combining learning and a sense of humor.” Mrs. McFadden has, I feel sure, voiced thg opinion of the average sensible-minded American on the matter, of phony culchah on the airwaves. The broad or half-broad A is heard in the speech of some (but by no means all) New Englanders. But it is simply a sectional speech mannerism, nothing more. The broad or half-broad A has no more to do with culture, refinement, ed ucation, or social prominence than the color of one’s eyes or the size of one’s feet. Cultured New Englanders know this, of course; and they are much amused at the agonized vocalizing that goes on in radio dramas, soap and cosmetics commercials, and the guest-star appearance of certain aging stage and screen players. The broad or half-broad A in the so-called "ask” words (ask, after, bath, dance, grasp, etc.) occurs na tively in the speech of only about 2 per cent of the population. The other 98 per cent do not use it in any of the "ask” words. As a matter of fact, it is in the process of becoming obsolescent even in New England. I know of a speech professor at a large Massachuseta college for women who is prepar ing to publish a book on the dis appearance of the broad A in New England speech. Elsewhere in the Nation the broad A doesn’t exist except as a conscious affectation. And I should like to emphasize to all actors, broadcast ers and public speakers that there is no surer way of losing friends and alienating people than affecta tion.
