VACANT —OPEN SATURDAY, 2:00 TO 5:00 P.M., SUNDAY, 1:00 TO TWI-LIGHT. MOORE & HILL COMPANY S04 17th STREET N.W. First Aid To Houses By Roger C. Whitman Question: We have fir floors which, of course, are soft wood. We live out of town and have no side walks. Consequently, we bring in a lot of sand on our shoes, which scratches and marks the floors terri bly. Even where chairs stand, dents are left, and everything scratches and mars the floors. They look awful. Is there any substance or treatment to give them a harder finish, and prevent all of these scratches and dents? Answer: Nothing will make soft wood into hardwood. But you can help the condition by keeping the floors well cleaned and polished with a good paste floor wax. Until you can manage to lay a sidewalk, which is something you might plan for when the weather warms up, keep plenty of rugs in the traffic lanes. Put fibre mats at the front door— both outside and inside—and sug gest to your family that they make good use of them. “Leg cups” under the legs of heavy furniture will help prevent denting. Tuck-Pointing Brick Chimney. Question: Would you be able to tell me how to repair our chimney? Up in the attic where it is quite damp, the mortar is powdering up between the bricks of the chimney, thereby loosening the bricks here and there. I would like to do the, job myself, if possible. Answer: Rake out the old mortar to a depth of half an inch or so, clean out loose bits, and wet the grooves with water. Then pack the joints with a mixture of 1 part port land cement, 1 part hydrated lime and 5 parts of clean, coarse sand, with just enough water to make a workable mixture. You also could buy a ready mix as sold by dealers in mason supplies. X advise you to see why your attic is so damp and do something about it. The condition is not good, and besides disintegrating your mortar the dampness may also rot the woodwork of your attic. You could protect your brickwork with a coat of cement base paint, containing a dampproofey, also sold by dealers in mason supplies.
