G. W. Student to Explain Theory Universe Was Created in Hour A 27-year-old George Washington University student will be ques tioned in public Wednesday on his theory that the universe was cre „ feted in an hour. "Hie occasion will be Ralph Asher Alpher's final examination for the degree of doctor of philosophy. It will be held at 2:30 pm. in the trustees’ room of the university library, 2023 G street N.W. Mr. Alpher is a fellow of the Graduate Council of the university. i His research work on his theory ! already has been reported in a pro Sessional journal, Physical Review. According to the student, every- | thing started with a hot compressed neutron gas. The universe ex-: panded, the neutrons decayed and; heavier chemical elements were built up for about an hour, he con tends, and then the universe achieved relative stability. Mr. Alpher is an associate physi cist at the Applied Physics Labora tory of the Johns Hopkins Univer sity, In Silver Spring. He lives at 8001 Eastern avenue, Silver Spring. He received his bachelor of sci ence degree from the university in 1943 and a master of science de gree in 1945. The examination Wednesday will be conducted by Dr. Thomas B. Brown, professor of physics; Dr. James Henry Taylor, professor of mathematics; Dr. Raymond John ! Seeger, professor lecturer in physics; | Dr. Robert R. Meijer, associate pro fessor of physics, all of the the ! university; Dr. Hans A. Bethe, pro fessor of physics at Cornell Uni versity; Dr. Hugo Pano, physicist in the x-ray section of the Bureau of Standards, and Dr. Charles Louis Critehfleld, associate professor of physics at the University of Minne sota. Priest Lauds Roxas' Faith in Democracy A Filipino priest, recalling the last recorded words of Manuel Roxas, yesterday urged the living to be faithful to the late Philippine president's pledge to maintain and defend the democratic way of life. Speaking at a requiem mass for President Roxas in St. Matthew’s Cathedral, Father H. de la'costs, 8. J., recalled that the late presi dent had said democracy is worth defending only if it is lived. "These were almost the last thoughts of Manuel Roxas: The immediacy of the danger which threatens the young republic as it threatens all free peoples and, at the same time, the superb op portunity it gives to prove of whafr mettle she is made,” said Father j de le Costa. The Most Rev. Patrick O’Boyle, Archbishop of Washington, offici ated at the mass, assisted by the Rev. Samuel Wiley, a prisoner of the Japanese in the Philippines. Also assisting in the mass were four Filipino priests, Fathers Vin cente Marasigan, Camilo Balansag, Hernando Maceda and Jaime Meri.
