The former VA official was found by his wife, Mrs. Catherine Cook, a statistician at the agency. She told police she had taken her dog for a walk and, when she returned, an unsigned, unaddressed note was found pinned to a portier in the hall. It read, "No Matches Lighted.” She found her husband a lew minutes later. Police were unable to explain the peculiar wording of the note. A Bureau of Standards spokes man said, however, that such fumes were not explosive, in case Dr. Cook had intended to warn his wife against a possible blast. Came Here in 1943. Sergt. Walter Vogelsang of the homicide squad reported Mrs. Cook told him of finding her husband under similar circumstances about four months ago. He suffered no ill effects that time, she said. Soldiers Bit Elderly Wo men •y th« Associated Press BERLIN, April 27—The Russians said today they did not accuse American soldiers of biting elderly German women on the streets of Berlin. It was all a translator’s mistake, they said. What MaJ. Alexander Kotikov ac tually said in the Berlin Kommand atura meeting last Friday, the So viet Army’s official publication re ported today, was that a 60-year-old Berlin woman had been “severely mishandled” by American troops. The Interpreter got it wrong and quoted him as saying "bitten.” The paper, Taegliche Rundschau, said MaJ. Kotikov and the trans lator both corrected the error, but that the western press “Just didn't pay any attention because it wanted to make a cheap Joke in order tc confuse a really earnest issue.” * Taft Defends Labor Act And Attacks Stassen's Criticism of Law §y th* Associated Press DAYTON, Ohio, April 27.—Sen ator Taft, Republican, of Ohio, today defended his labor record and the controversial Taft-Hartley Act and criticized the stand of Harold E. Stassen of Minnesota. Senator Taft started a tour of Ohio's 3d Congressional district, where Mr. Stassen stumped last week in his fight w'ith the Ohioan for 23 of the State’s 53 delegates to the Republican National Con vention. The Senator is the Ohio Republican organization's favorite son candiate. In a press conference, Senator Taft declared Mr. Stassen was "ap pealing to the employers by saying he is for the Taft-Hartley Act and appealing for the labor vote by criticisms.” Hits Stand on Loyalty Oath. Mr. Stassen would repeal the re quirement for union leaders to take an anti-Communist loyalty oath, he said, then added, “this is one of the most desirable and effective provisions.” He asserted that he himself al ways had opposed strike injunctions for private business and.moved to take such a provision out of the Taft-Hartley Act while it was being debated. This and the La Guardia labor laws permit injunctions against strikes only for the Govern ment. "The Stassen labor law in Minne sota,” he said, referring to a meas ure passed when Mr. Stassen was Governor there, “has a private in junction provision.” Explains Position on Lilienthal. Senator Taft explained his an nounced opposition to confirmation of David Lilienthal as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission as unwillingness “to saddle a new ad ministration with such long appoint ments to such a vital commission.” President Truman nominated Mr. Lilienthal, former chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority, for a five-year term, and the other four members for terms of four, three, two and one years. ‘‘I’m not trying to throw Lilien thal or any one else out,” 8enator Taft said. “Their qualifications and merits are not questioned.” #He indicated he would not oppose one-year appointments. Mr. Stassen, he said, failed to “make any issues that justifies his indorsement over me" in his trip here last week. Georgetown Citizens rile Fly Ash Nuisance Protest With fly ash again threatening the Georgetown area, the George town Citizens’ 'Association last night voted to send a reminder to the Commissioners to make them "aware" of the problem. Col. C. A. Seone feels the only I way to get rid of the fly ash is to remove the .incinerator. “It does not belong in George town,” he said. The gravel pits and water front activities should be converted into a park similar to that around Halns Point, he pointed out. ! . ' Georgetown is no longer a port of entry,” he pointed out.
