April 27 (4b.—Cotton futures turned firm today following early easiness Aggressive mill buying, along with some replacement commission horse demand and short covering supported the upturn. The market was largely influ enced by the situation in nearby May where 119 May transferable notices were issued on the first notice day for that contract. Liquidating pressure was light in the spot month, indicating that a good por tion of the notice were promptly stopped, ana this steadied the balance of the market. Reuther Case Suspect,’ Sought on Word From Tipster, Is Arrested By th« Auociatod Press DETROIT, April 27.—Police to day arrested a minor union official said by a tipster to have threatened once to shoot Walter P. Reuther., president of the United Auto Work- j ers, CIO. The unnamed man was supposed to have remarked at the UAW con vention in Atlantic City last No vember that “I’d like to take a shot at him.” * Two unnamed tipsters told police, the man wore a pistol on his belt at the time he purportedly made the remark. It was at that convention that Mr. Reuther gained complete con trol of the 1,000,000-man UAW-CIO in winning re-election as its presi dent. Suspect Has Alibi. No charge was placed against the man, who was held for investiga tion. Inspector Joseph V. Krug said1 he claimed an alibi for the time Mr. | Reuther was shot in his home a week ago today. Police Commissioner Harry S. Toy said the man in custody was a steel worker and an officer in' a UAW-CIO local. Some steel plants closely connected with the auto in dustry are under the UAW-CIO. i Mr. Reuther's arm was nearly 1 tom off just a week ago by a shot gun blast fired through the kitchen window of his home. He is reported to be making good progress toward! recovery, and physicians believe the arm may be restored. A 37-year-old ex-convict and for mer UAW local officer also was held for further questioning regarding his activities the night of the at tack on Mr. Reuther. Dozen Men Questioned. No charge has been placed against Carl Bolton, one-time vice president of Ford Highland Park local 400. But Circuit Judge Miles N. Culehan ordered yesterday that he be held until noon today after Assistant Prosecutor R&bert Reese said there were "a number of discrepancies” in Bolton’s story. The unionist’s attorney charged his arrest was illegal. Bolton was held in default of $10,00 bond. Nearly a dozen men connected with the UAW have been questioned in the Reuther investigation, but all the others have been released. Chicago Livestock CHICAGO.
