Union's Bank Account
Controlled by Kelly,
Local Nonmember
Although he was not even a mem
ber of the group, Larry Kelly, miss
ing defendant, controled the bank
account of Local 832 of the Inter
national Hod Carriers’ Union (AFL),
located in Southern Maryland, ac
cording to Government evidence in
the labor conspiracy trial in District
Court.
The prosecution now is focusing
attention on the Southern Maryland
phase of the case, in which it con
tends Washington area union funds
were diverted illegally to build two
night clubs and laborers’ barracks
near Cedar Point, Md. Kelly was
treasurer of the Building Commit
tee of Local 74 here.
The account was in a Leonard
town (Md.) bank where Kelly did
not even have a signature card to
withdraw funds, according to Leo A.
Rover, special assistant to the At
torney General. Mr. Rover put in
evidence checks signed by Kelly on
behalf of Local 832 and totaling
$17,000.
A Government witness, Mrs. Edna
Hammett of Leonardtown, former!
employe of Local B32. was expected
to return to the witness stand today
in the conspiracy trial against six
defendants, all associated with the
union. The Government maintains
the conspiracy illegally netted $100,
000 of union funds.
Mrs. Hammett yesterday identi
fied check books and stubs of Local
832, which were put in evidence
by Mr. Rover. These included a
$1,300 check made out jointly to
Miss Dorothy Bond, later Mrs.
Kelly, and to the defendant Lsaac
Weiner, Leonardtown insurance and
real estate man and movie theater
ooerator, one-time member of Local
832.
Mrs. Hammett said at Kelly’s
orders she drew a check for $6,313
for the District Council of the union
and that this was sent to the City
Bank.
During the last 18 months he was
around here, Kelly was "under the
weather and drinking intoxicating
beverages,” according to the testi
mony of George W. Clark, business
agent for Local 74 from 1941 to
1943, another Government witness.
Kelly has been granted a separate
trial, but the defense maintains he
died in the Pacific during the war.
Kelly made a report on the night
club investments to a membership
meeting of Local 74, Mr. Clark
testified. The witness said Kelly
explained that Local 832 had a large
reserve in its treasury and was in
