Duff Says Write-in In Pennsylvania Has No Effect on Delegates By the Associoted Pres* HARRISBURG. Pa.. April 29— It was still anybody's guess today as to what effect Tuesday's presidential write-in vote will have on the Penn sylvania delegation at the Repub lican National Convention. Gov. James H. Duff, head of the 73-man delegation, said the ballot ing will have no effect. But Harold E. Stassen, victor in the popularity j contest, insists the Pennsylvania re suit ‘ may turn out to be a key event in the nomination.” "I am confident that Pennsylvania has not as yet made up its mind ion choosing a GOP presidential nominee i and I interpret Tues* day s write-in to mean exactly that,” Gov. Duff told a news conference yesterday. Few Wrote in Choices. Only a tiny fraction of the 2,676, 972 Republican voters in Pennsyl-* vania wrote in a presidential pref erence. The governor’s interpretation strengthens a belief that the Key stone state’s GOP delegation with hold its powerful bloc of votes un til a strategic moment at the con vention. Despite an active write-in campaign in his behalf, he finished third. Ahead of him was Mr. Stassen by 33,000 votes and Thomas E. Dewey of New York by 28,000. Dewey “Significance” Noted. Gov. Dewey’s total of 69.426 votes, the Governor said, possessed “the most significance'' in Tuesday's pri mary. The comparatively few ballots— 7,944—cast for Senator Vandenberg of Michigan brought this comment from Gov. Duff: “I definitely attribute the fact that his vote was not larger to the fact that he people did no know he was available.” The Governor did not reply to a reporter’s question whether an ‘‘in ference’’ could be drawn on Senator Vandenberg’s availability. Senator Vandenberg was sixth be hind Stassen. Dewey, Martin, Gen. Douglas MacArthur and Senator Taft. He was ahead of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Henry Wallace Stassen Hits Back at Taft For Campaign Criticism TRENTON, N. J„ April 28 Harold E. Stassen. with an enthusi astic welcome behind him, turned today to wooing New Jersey’s 35 votes in the Republican National' Convention. More than 5.000 persons heard him deliver his first major New Jersey: speech last night at Princeton Uni versity in which he hit back at Senator Taft for criticizing his long campaign. “It has been my conviction,” he declared, “that what this country needed most was a more liberal Re publican Party with a world-wide viewpoint.” Mr. Stassen called for a system of selective service that would permit! students to complete their education. For nearly an hour he answered a barrage of questions from the audi ence, mostly students. Gov. Driscoll, who will go to the GOP convention as New Jersey s favorite son candidate, introduced Mr. Stassen as a man who ’ believes this country is due to lead in world affairs not for one year or for two years, but until the task is com pleted.'' Devoting most of his speech to foreign affairs, Nfy-. Stassen reit erated a demand that the Com- j munist Party be outlawed, the United States join with other na tions in establishing joint bases and a defense plan against Russia, and the United Nations be reorganized to strip Russia of the veto power. Today he will meet delegates and party leaders at an off-the-record luncheon talk here. His visit was the first by a candidate for the Re publican presidential nomination. Gov. Thomas E. Dewey will speak in New Jersey May 26 and Senator Taft an May 18. Taft Remains Silent On Pennsylvania Vote TOLEDO, Ohio, April 29 Senator Taft moved here today in his Ohio primary campaign, but still had not commented on results of Tuesday's “write-in” balloting in Pennsylvania. Senator Taft was fifth in the field of presidential candidates, led by Harold E. Stassen, who seeks 23 of Ohio's 53 GOP presidential dele gates next Tuesday. Yesterday Senator Taft singled out the Republican welfare program under his leadership as new evi dence he is “more liberal” than the former Minnesota Governor. "The program which I have worked out is based on definite principles of liberty and equality,” he said in a Canton address. Federal aid to education, Federal housing and health were features: of the welfare program which he claimed credit for by reason of his leadership in the Senate. He declared Mr. Stassen has no educational program as yet but has stated in campaign speeches that I *<g) SAVE! compare with package soaps! Actvatty casts kn than lead ing *oape and powders.
