REpublic 6212 % All Military Plane Transport To Be Merged Effective June 7 By John A. Giles Consolidation of the Naval and Air Force air transport systems into a single Military Air Transport Serv ice with 274 planes and routes total* l ing 65,000 miles will become a i reality on June 1, Defense Secretary Forrestal announced yesterday. It will mark the first real merger of any sizeable functions of the *armed services since passage of the unification act last year. The new' command, headed by MaJ. Gen. Laurence S. Kuter, has been assigned to the .Air Force and will operate directly under the chief of staff, Gen. Hoyt S. Vanden berg. Both the Naval Air Transport Service and the Air Transport Command will cease to exist. Originally the MATS was sche duled to begin operations. May 1 but Assistant Air Force Secretarj C. V. Whitney explained that “du< to the tremendous amount of detail involved in the negotiations it wa' found impractical to put it intc effect until a month later,” Mr Forrestal directed the consolidation on March 1. “Bound to Be a Saving.” Officials would make no estimate of savings to the taxpayer, but Gen Kuter pointed out that “it is cleai that where duplicating control and terminal establishments can be eliminated, there is bound to be a saving.” He cited National Airport as an example, and announced that du plicating terminal facilities main tained there by ATC and NATS had been eliminated and the old ATC I Portable Typewriters IMMEDIATE DELIVERY ON NEW Royal, Smith-Corona, Underwood, Rem ington and other makes. The MATS, whose routes will go around the world, will be responsi ble for providing domestic and for eign scheduled air transportation for all three services and other Gov ernmental agencies when required. It will operate two lines to the Orient—one from San Francisco by, way of Honolulu, Kwajalein and Guam, and the other through | Anchorage, Adak and Tokyo. It has i three trans-Atlantic routes and three across the United States. It has routes to Central America °nd down to Rio de Janeiro and a line in the West through Canada to i Kittigazuit and Cambridge Bay. On ! the eastern coast a line goes through | Newfoundland to Greenland and up j to Thule, then over to Eureka Sound and Resolute Bay in the Northern (Canadian region. It will be possible to circle the ! globe by MATS via Burma, India, the Middle East and North Africa. There are no routes to Australia. The terminal in Germany is Frank , furt. The ATC will put 176 four-en gine planes into MATS, and the NATS will contribute 39. On some of the routes there will be 55 two engine planes from ATC and four from NATS. The MATS will have 11,900 uni formed personnel of which 8,900 will come from ATC and 3,000 from the Navy. Mr. Whitney noted that the Navy officers could command Air Force people and vice versa. "Disciplinary actions, when re quired, will go up their own service channels,” he added. Rear Admiral John P. Whitney is vice commander of MATS. There will be two deputy commanders— Maj. Gen. William H. Turney for air transport operations and Maj. Gen. H. M. McClelland for operational j services. \ The consolidated service also will be responsible for providing global Air Force communications, weather, air rescue and flight services. No naval air facilities,, will be turned over to the MATS organization but services will be rendered where needed. Both Mr. Whitney and Gen. Kuter, as well as John N. Brown, Secretary of the Navy for Air, stressed that the consolidation would be evolved gradually and the organization was "flexible.” For the time being, Air Force and Navy crews will continue 'on their present jobs. One example of the new operation is illustrated by Air Force and Navy flights from National Airport to the West Coast. The NATS has been flying the "Hot-Shot” six times weekly from here to Moffett Field near San Francisco, and the ATC the "States man” three times weekly to Fair field near the same city. The NATS will continue to operate nine flights weekly as long as required and even tually they will land at the same West Coast base. Air Derby to Be Held Today At Bailey's Crossroads The 12th annual Washington Air Derby will‘be held at 2 o’clock this ; afternoon at the Washington-Vir ginia Airport at Bailev’s Crossroads. Va. * Stunts will include landing an air plane atop a running automobile and two and a half mile delayed para chute jumps. Tommy Dorsey, or chestra leader, has been invited as an honor guest. One of the highlights of the show will be the flying of a ‘ Siamese air plane”—two planes bolted together— the left wing removed from one and the right wing off another, and the planes then joined, officials ex plained.
