Old newspapers, laboriously col lected from neighbors near his Rockville home have made it pos sible for James J. Taylor; jr., 11, to enter the Washington Soap Box Derby, June 26. When James decided sometime ago he wanted to be one of those in the seventh running of the prize laden event, he knew he needed some money for materials. So he set out to raise it by collecting and selling old papers. He lives on a farm with his parents and five brothers and sister. It wasn't a short trip to the home of his neigh bors to pickup the papers. But the work has paid off. James has the frame of his coaster built and will be ready soon to cover his car. Barked by Legion Post. He is being sponsored in the race by Spengler Post No. 12 of the American Legion. They will buy the wheels for his car, so that he can spend all his spare time working on his vehicle instead of collecting papers. The youth, captain of the Safety Patrol at the Potomac School, I plays guitar for a hobby. He recent-! iy entertained the Legionnaires j sponsoring him by playing and; kinging. Edward Garber, a personal assist ant to the director of racing, first interested James in the Derby. Be cause in a family of six children j there isn't too much room to spread i out the tools and building materials necessary to construct a motorless racer, Mr. Garber donated space in his garage to the youth. There he works each evening until dark. He is building a “most stream lined" racer. So thin is it, that Mr. Garber keeps a close check on James’ hip measurements, td make sure the youth doesn't grow wider than the cockpit before Derby Day. More Entries Pour In. Unless Congress acts, the admin istration’s authority to adjust for eign trade tariffs expires June 12. Testifying before a House Ways and Means subcommittee, Mr. Clay ton said: 9 "To fail to renew this act now, or to renew it with crippling amend ment, would definitely be considered by other countries as not only a surrender of our leadership in this Held, but as a repudiation of much that has already been accomplished in the world under that leadership.” Mr. Clayton is a former Under secretary of State. He wound up the administration’s case after six days of closed hearings. The Brotherhood of Railway' Clerks threw its support to the ex tension of the ect. George M. Harrison, president of the union, told the subcommittee the act is necessary to stimulate and expand war-crippled world trade.
