Stassen and Gov. Thomas E. I Dewey today headed into the home , stretch of thair clear-cut race for i this State’s Republican presidential . preference vote. Both candidates thumped on the 1 topic of communism last night. ! Mr. Stassen initiate*? his final 1 drive in an address here. At the * same time, his New York opponent ■ appeared before a crowd at Pendle ton, in the Eastern Oregon wheat * region. Each has a full schedule of " appearances through the State be fore the ballots are cast May 21. The election is the last direct primary before the party’s national nomination convention in June. Both candidates—alone in the race —have to a great measure their presidential chances at stake in winning in Oregon. Debate Scene Undecided. Still undecided is the time and place for the unprecented debate the two have agreed to stage. Mr Stassen said on arriving back in Oregon yesterday he hopes the discussion on Communism would in clude vital national issues. At Pendleton, aides of Gov. Dewey in dicated that Mr. Stassen’s view had been transmitted to the governor and that he may have it under con sideration. Aides are to meet today on the debate arrangements. The fSinnesotan reiterated last night his earlier demand that Com munist organizations be outlawed ‘‘in America and all freedom loving countries.” He spoke before less iUnn 1 CAA narcnnc “I realize full well that theit are i those who disagree with me in this position,” he said. “President Tru man, GoV. Dewey and Henry Wal 1 lace all continue to believe that the blessings of legality should be ex tended to the Communist organ ization.” He then referred to his opponent in the Oregon primary. He said “I am certain that Gov. Dewey is sincere in his position, but I sub mit that he is mistaken.” Food Declared Key Weapon. At Pendleton, Gov. Dewey assert ed America’s food production is the only realistic weapon against the spread of Communism in the world. “In our foreign relations we must use food as a positive force for peace,” he said. “Pood is certainly on a par with guns and ships and airplanes. So far as the average citizen abroad is concerned, it Is ever so much more important.” The New York executive predicted the battle against communism is going to be a long, tough one. “It is not going to be over in a few months or a few years. Com munism has its best chance with people who are hungry, poorly clothed and ill-housed,” he said. Mr. Stassen remains in Portland for another rally tonight, then heads upstate.
