Spokesmen for the major retail food distributors in the District said the price of food was essentially the same as this time last week. Normal changes in prices, resulting from market conditions, were the only ones noticeable, the spokesman said. The Associated Press roundup said Government purchases for price support and shipment to Europe put firm floors on the prices of many foods. The rail embargoes on the eve of the expected railroad strike confused some markets, but most retail outlets had ample supplies, it was reported. • , Meat supplies were adequate fn most places, although production at slaughter houses was still below last year’s level because of the packing house strikes.* If the strike ended there would be nothing on the hor izon to indicate any widespread in crease of prices in the near future, food spokesmen said here. The dried fruit industry hailed the Agriculture Department’s an nouncement that it would enter the market as a buyer. The trade be lieves this will take up the surplus and leave the market healthy when the new pack season begins. The roundup estimated that con sumers are spending about 10 per cent more than they were a year ago. Wholesale grocers reported dollar volume up an average of 5 per cent over last year.
