NAtional 3223 Experienced Advertisers Prefer The Star * |6 New Synthetic Drugs Indicate I Eventual Victory Over Malaria By Thomas R. Henry Scitnca Editor of Th« Star Six new synthetic drugs developed | during the war give hope for the eventual conquest of malaria. They were reported to the Fourth International Congresses on Tropical Medicine and Malaria here today by physicians from the United States, England and France. Malaria, it was emphasized, is permanently debilitating. During the war, it was the cause of the greatest amount of sickness. It renders almost a fourth of the world’s population unable to work at fullest efficiency. Its tendency to recur season after season and to be spread by local mosquitoes makes it a primary public health problem. Many New Drugs Developed. The classical malaria remedy up to eight years ago was quinine. In some cases it cured the disease com pletely and in others it acted as a potent suppressive when given regu larly in malaria seasons. Unfortu nately, the chief source of this drug was the Dutch East Indies, taken over early by the Japanese. Scien tists of all the Allied countries went to work to find an effective substi tute. Rail Freight Rate Rise Studied in Virginia By th» Associated Prm RICHMOND, Va., May 14—The State Corporation Commission to day had under advisement a plea from Virginia railroads for approval of further Increases in intra-State freight rates. At a public hearing yesterday the railways asked the SCC to grant the same increases on intra-State traf fic which the Interstate Commerce Commission granted May 6 on in terstate traffic. The new rates are 30 per cent higher than those of last summer in the East, including most of Virginia, and 25 per cent higher in the South. Principal witnesses were Carl W. Dilli and H. M. Riley, freight rate experts of the Southern Railway Co. Mr. Dilli devoted much of his testi mony to a plea that the Virginia Commission grant intra-State rate Increases on shipments of bitumi nous coal from Southwest Virginia mines. The SCC denied such in creases last year when other intra State' raises were approved. Mr. Dilli estimated that the high er schedules, if approved in full, ! would mean an additional $385,000 to the Southern. The commission gave no indica tion of the probable date of deciding the case. •• • : . . ' -:. , ;:;*.***•>• ’-\ "$ A. G. All are available for use in hospitals or under the direction of a physician. TTiree of the new drugs, chloro guine and pentaquine, are American. The former cannot be considered a cure but is a very active supressant, said Drs. David P. Earle and Robert W. Berlinger of the New York Uni versity College t>f Medicine. It is RESORTS. Alving of the University of Chicago, has reduced the relapse rate from South Pacific malaria from 08 per cent to 25 per cent. A second treat ment of the same persons has re duced the rate to 2 per cent. Dr. B. O. Maegraith of the Liver pool School of Tropical Medicine described the British chemists' answer to the malaria problem— paludrine. It notably reduces the relapse rate and appears almost nontoxic.
