Red Party in Germany Shifting Toward Unity Only in Eastern Reich BERLIN, May 17 (CDN). — A dramatic, but so far carefully con cealed switch, seems to be occurring in the policy of the Soviet-spon sored Socialist Unity Party (SED) in the Soviet-occupied zone of Ger many. Since Its formation, shortly after the end of the war, by a coalition of Communists and leftwing social ist*, the party’s principal slogan and the basis for its appeal has been “unity” of Germany. Now that seems to have gone by the boards in favor of “unity” of Eastern Germany alone, with de velopment, at the same time, of a “people'* front,” like that in other Eastern European countries, in place of the present party system. Such switches In policy always leave a trail of wrecked careers and bewildered officials. According to reports, there is currently under way a quiet purge of SED leaders in the Soviet zone who have plunked hardest for “unity.” In their places are coming men whose description always is “pro gressive.” They need not neces sarily be open Communists. One thing Is absolutely essential, how ever—agreement with the present Russian program, or s much as any one can discover of it. A long record of Communist Party regularity seems to be no guarantee for office holders or dis trict leaders. If they find it difficult to follow such dazzling alterations, they are out. Another switch Is occurring with in the Soviet military administra tion Itself. New political advisers have appeared, not only for top1 < men but even for those on the ] level of the Berlin commander, Gen. j ■ Kotikov, who cannot as much as adjourn a meeting now without1 getting an okay first from a man identified only as •'Maximov.” ] Maximov was much in evidence at yesterday’s Kommandatura meet- j ing, the only four-power agency | that makes even a pretense of con tinued operation. In almost 12 hours of talking, almost nothing was accomplished. Everyone lost his temper, however, and the; French member, Gen. Gonval, missed a dinner appointment when PURE AS MONEY CAN BUY WHY PAY MORE —or accept less than the quick aspirin pain relief St. Joseph Aspirin assures. It's so dependable.
