Tune in The Whistler, America’s top mystery shout, CBS, Wed. night I MUM Marshal Told to Evict 16 Families Failing to Quit Trailer Camp The National Capital Parks Office today charged about 16 families with “unlawful occu{>ation” of Government land in the East Po tomac Park trailer camp and called upon the law to eject them and their trailers from the property. Officials said the families had failed since Sunday to comply with the latest order to vacate the camp or move to the new temporary site provided for them on Columbia Island. Marshal Instructed to Act. Patience was worn thin, after months of “futile persuasion," they said. So the United States Mar shal’s Office was instructed by let ter to proceed under authority of existing statutes to oust the tres passers and restore the property to NCP. Under the circumstances, they said the marshal probably would give them 24 hour’s notice before evicting those who still re main. Only one family, characterized as “a hardship case,” occupied the new temporary trailer camp on Colum bia Island for which NCP had gone to considerable expense in provid ing electric powfcr, hot water and guard protection. One other hard ship case will be cared for at the camp, it was explained. Wanted for Tourists. NCP wants.the trailer camp re stored fully for the use of transi ent tourists, who are allowed to stay for no more than two weeks. Some of the trespassers have ["squatted” on the site for two or three years, having taken advan tage of the relation of rules during thp loti* war Months ago NCP tried to per suade them to leave, before the spring crop of tourists arrived. Practically no one heeded the re quests. Then, on March 30, formal notices were filed by the Park Po lice, and from time to time park officials leniently extended the period during whieh they could re main. Recently the Army restored the former cantonment on Colum bia Island, and it was believed most of the trespassing families would move there. The site is open for occupancy until June 1, when all buildings are to be de stroyed.
