President, Pope and Press All in Margaret’s Routine By Jay Carmody Miss Margaret O'Brien and the press paid a duty call on each other in Loew’s screening room yesterday, but they really had no time j to sit down for anything like a real heart-to-heart talk. The truth is they barely got beyond the amenities before Margaret, who probably is the busiest 11-year-old alive, had to dash for a plane. The plane was to take her to New York where she was scheduled to. appear last mgm on a raaio pro gram. She was scheduled for three rehearsals before going on the net work and it did not look as if she would have time for more than one. While she is what the profession calls a "quick study,” she neverthe less likes enough rehearsal to get set. She has been having an exciting time lately, she admitted, what with meeting President Truman, His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, Prime Minister Atlee and others of that! international size. Until she hears the Pope’s side of the story, which she feels certain she never will, she won't know what kind of an impression she made upon him. She thinks it might have been a little confusing to him, too. This grew out of the Pope’s ques tion: “What do you study little! girl?” Margaret, who at 11, is not ac customed to being asked questions by international church heads, got the query confused with w-hat she did. “I’m an actress,” she explained. The Pope, apparently no more accustomed to meeting 11-year-old actresses than Margaret to meeting Popes, found it his turn to be con fused. "Yes,” he said, "but I mean what do you study?” "Oh.” said Margaret, "why geo graphy and history, of course.” I Looking back upon it, she thinks that was the answer he was looking for. * * * * Margaret, who did not mind being told she was prettier than when she was 7, and who did not say that little girls at 11 are supposed to be prettier, is more proud of an idea that she recently sold to L. B. Mayer than of having met so many in teresting people. The idea is for a serial, a sort of distaff side of Andy Hardy story. She will play the part of a girl named Violet, which, by no special twist of the imagination, will be the title of the series. Margaret who is not old enough to have heard of protocol sold the idea to Mr. Mayer herself. "Violet,” she explains, “is a gill my age, who wears her hair in plats, or braids, and wears horn-rimmed spectacles. So, I put my hair in braids and put on horn-rimmed glasses and went into Mr. Mayer’s office and started acting Violet.” The head of M-G-M was a bit j startled by this, but as an O’Brien: fan, took it calmly and asked in a quiet voice: "What are you doing, Margaret?” "I am not Margaret,” Margaret says she said, “I am Violet.” Mr. Mayer apparently w>as con vinced, for Margaret walked out of his office with his assent to her ap Where and When Current Theater Attractions and Time of Showing Stage. I The series star thinks it will be something like the Andy Hardy: story which Mickey Rooney Anallyj grew out of. She has not talked over the story line very completely with WhitAeld Cook who will write “Violet.” If they're very worried that she might grow up with a yearning to try her hand at their jobs, the Metro writers and directors can relax. Ask Margaret a point-blank question about wanting eventually to write or direct and you get the point tyank answer: ‘ No, I want just to be an actress and a dog-trainer.” A more charming combination of yearnings is unimaginable. * * * * Poor Universal-International pic tures has had a W'retched time with the Deanna Durbin picture which it started out with some months ago as “White House Girl.” Since there was a White House girl, and only one, it Agured out for itself that there was too much chance for such a title being confused. With just a proper trace of polite embarrassment, U-I announced that it was changing “White House Girl” to “Washington Girl.” There seemed to be so many of the latter that the change looked both safe and Anal, but yesterday the studio had still another change of heart. It rechristened “Washing ton Girl” as “Everybody’s Sweet heart,” by which title it will be known for the time being at least. Any Washington girl who wants to know just what logic there is in such a title change will have to ask Universal -International. * * * * Bulletin board: “The Iron Cur tain” will hold for a second week at Loew's Capitol. . . . Hollywood: Greer Garson Aims for Lead In ‘Streetcar’ By Sheilah Graham Greer Garson realizes her career will go into a new high if she can capture the star movie spot in “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Conse quently, redheaded Greer is using her special brand of strategy to win out over Joan Crawford. Greer’s chances are bright because her boss, L. B. Mayer, has an “in” with the producer of “Desire”—Irene Mayer Selznick, his daughter. Miss Crawford denies she has a new love in her life. “I read some where,” says Joan, “that I am in love with an airplane pilot. I never go up in the air and I don’t know anv pilots.” Robert Mitchum might like to know that his loanout price from David Selznick is spurting upward. For a package deal with Valli and Louis Jourdain, David is now asking $400,000 for the trio. This proved too much for William Bacher, who wanted them for “If This Be My Harvest” at RKO. Jack L. Warner, I hear, has a top winner in the Marilyn Miller biog raphy, “Silver Lining.” It should be. During production Jack is in creasing his own vigorous schedule .
