Police Ask Federal Aid
In Anacostia River
Oil Seepage Probe
Harbor Police and the Corpora
tion Counsel's office today are seek
ing Federal aid to determine which
of two firms having oil storage
tanks here is responsible for oil
seepage along 400-foot stretch of
Anacostia River water front.
Chemical analysts of the Interior
Department are being requested to
make comparative tests of the over
flow oil to learn the source. The
investigation may lead to possible
criminal prosecution against the
firm responsible for the seepage.
This course was decided yester
day by Assistant Corporation
Counsel Philip Brophy in a hearing
to which representatives of the
Washington Gaslight and L. P.
Steuart & Bro., Inc., were sum
moned to answer complaints of a
boatyard owner, who says his
property is periodically soiled by
oil.
Believes Pipelines Leas.
Albert M. Rose told Prosecutor
Brophy . his yard, which adjoins
that of the Steuart fuel oil firm
and the gaslight company in the
vicinity of Thirteenth and Water
streets S.E., is covered with oil
seepage which, he said, apparently
springs from leaking underground
pipelines oi either or both of the
other properties.
Lt. Otha R. Sanders, Harbor Pre
-inct chief, reported the seepage
has occurred off and on during the
past eight months, usually during
heavy rains, when the water ap
parently causes the leaking oil tc
rise to the surface and flow onto
Mr. Rose's boatyard. The boatkeep
er pointed out the oil also gets into
the river and dirties craft which he
keeps there.
Deny Firms at Fault.
Attorneys for the gas company
and Steuart brothers denied their
firms’are at fault, although they
conceded somebody’s pipelines are
leaking. Both firms keep at least
two large storage tanks in operation
at all times, according to police.
The oil is conveyed to the tanks
from barges which connect to the
pipelines.
Informed that oil sometimes
saturates the ground over an 80,000
square-foot area, Mr. Brophy
warned that if the complaint arises
in the future, and he is able to
prove whose oil is seeping, he will
charge the offender for each day
the nuisance exists and will recom
mend maximum fine of $100 on
each case resulting in a court con
viction.
Friendship Furnishings Sale
Brings Total of $225r000
Sales dtiring the auction of fur
nishings at Friendship, estate of the
late Evalyn Walsh McLean, totaled
an estimated $225,000, Attorney
Norman Diamond said yesterday.
Mr. Diamond said the furnishings
and personal property had been
appraised at about $134,000. The
highest bid was $7,500 for a walnut
piano decorated with gilt, which
went to a New York piano dealer.
The house and grounds of the
estate are for sale.
Approximately $150,000 of the
sales proceeds will be credited to
Mrs. McLean's estate and the rest
to that of her father-in-law, John
R. McLean, Mr. Diamond explained.
