The policemen, Pvts. L. R. Harris i and M. T. Feggan, of the second precinct, arrested the man when ;they found him at the window and charged him with housebreaking. He was listed as Edward T. Hill, age and address unknown. The man came in and asked to see some rings, Mr. Rimson told police. After showing a few he turned his back and was hit over the head. Dewey C. Morris. 40, of 1267 Owens ; place N.E.. a cab driver, was robbed | of $30 last night by a passenger who held him up with a small revolver at Thirteenth street and Downing | place N.E, police reported. The bandit forced Mr. Morris out of the ! cab and drove away. The vehicle 1 was recovered later at Sixth street and Florida avenue N.E. Three Found Guilty Of Beating Policemen Three persons, charged with assault in connection with the beating of two policemen in the 800 block of Thirteenth street N.E. on May 1. were found guilty by a jury in Municipal Court yesterday. They are Caesar Nathaniel Steven ison, 33, and Mrs. Mamie Lou Jack son. 44, of the 800 block of Thir teenth street N.E.. and Roland Smith. 27, of the 700 block of the same street. All are colored. The three were charged with assaulting Pvts. Harvey C. Womble and Roy R. Swenk, both of the ninth precinct, when the officers went to a house in the block and attempted to place a juvenile under arrest on a disorderly conduct charge. Before the fight was over, several others had joined in, the policemen said. Several squads of police were summoned. The jury yesterday acquitted a fourth man charged with the assault. He is George Edward Wash ington, 22, colored, also of the 800 block of Thirteenth street N.E. Two others have been turned over to the Juvenile Court. The case was tried in the court of Judge Ellen K. Raedy with Assistant District Attorney Frank Riefsnyder presenting the case for the Government and, Ben Lyndas representing the defendants. The three will be sentenced next Thurs day. Merit Medal Awarded To 65 Scientists The award of the Medal of Merit to 65 scientists and engineers of the wartime Office of Scientific Research and Development was announced by Defense Secretary Forrestal. Dr. Vannevar Bush, director of the office during the war and now chairman of the Research and De velopment Board and president of the Carnegie Institution here, was to present seven of the medals in the Pentagon today7 to the following: Dr. Leason Heberling Adams, Dr. John Swalm Burlew and Dr. Richard Brooke Roberts, all of Carnegie In stitution; Dr. Edward F. Knipling, Agriculture Department, Bureau of Entomology; Roger Sherman War liar, jr., and Caroll Louis Wfilson, both of the Atomic Energy Commis sion, and Dr. Alan Tower Waterman, Office of Naval Research. In addition, Mr. Forrestal an nounced that 387 other persons will receive the President's Certificate of Merit and 782 others have been awarded the War and Navy Depart ment's Certificate of Appreciation. Their names will be anounced later. The other 58 scientists and en gineers will be awarded their medals by commanding generals of Army areas and naval district comman dants. Michigan U. Raises Rates ANN ARBOR, Mich., May 21 WP). —The cost of living went.up yester day at the University of Michigan. The university announced a 51 i per cent increase in its dormitory room and board rates.
