New Chevrons and Insignia *
Are Approved for Air Force
• Air Force personnel will begin
getting that ‘‘new look” in about
six months.
The department today announced
approval of new types of chevrons
and insignia for caps, collars and
lapels for enlisted men as well as
new metal buttons for all person
nel.
Congress refused several weeks
ago to approve funds for blue uni
forms for the airmen. Procurement
of chevrons and signia vill start
immediately out of current funds,
but existing old-style Army goods
will be used until Inventories are
exhausted. The Department esti
mated the gradual transition will
begin in six months.
Contrasting with the Army’s new
style one and three-quarters inch
wide chevrons, the new air emblems
will be four inches wide. They will
be silver-gray stripes on a dark
blue background in the shape of a
■‘V” pointed downward. There will
be a silver-gray star at the bottom.
The various grades of enlisted

men will wear the same number of
stripes as on the old-style chevrons.
The cap insignia for both officers
and men will be the American eagle
military shield used now, but for
enlisted men it will be Inclosed in
a circle, one and live-eighths inches
in diameter. The size and design
of the lapel propeller insignia and
the coat collar ‘‘UJS.’* Insignia will
remain unchanged, but they also
will be encircled for enlisted men.
Gold-colored metal buttons on
the blouse and overcoat will be
changed to incorporate the Air
Force seal.
