Congressional Club Told to Drop Bingo Or Face Prosecution Official* of the Congressional Country Club, have been ordered by Montgomery County police to halt bingo in the club or face prosecution. • Although the order was Issued last week, it did not come to light until after a “secret” session of the County Commissioners late yes terday, during which Board Presi dent Brooke Johns attempted un successfully to postpone enforce ment of the edict for "at least a week.” His attempt failed when Com missioner Oliver W. Youngblood, County Supervisor Irving O. McNayr and F. Barnard Welsh, attorney to the board, supported Police Chief Charles M. Orme, according to Mr. Youngblood. Commissioner Wesley I. Sauter was in Baltimore and could not at tend while the two other commis sioners, Charles H. Jamison and George C. Esworthv, failed to ap pear, although notified of the meet ing. Mr. Johns said later he was “an noyed” because police had given club officials only 48 hours to discontinue the games described by detectives as being of "considerable scope.” He said hundreds of invitations to an "affair” had been sent out and that cancellation would work a harciship on the club. Police should have warned club officials and “given them at least a week's notice,” Mr. Johns asserted. “They are all very fine people over there and are doing nothing wrong that I can see,” he added. “Maybe it is breaking the law. but they're doing the same thing everybody else is doing.” Mr. Youngblood said Chief Orme had issued the order after receiving several complaints. He said the activities complained of had been going on for some time. After the order had been issued, Mr. Youngblood said, club officials called Mr. Johns who, in turn, called yesterday’s meeting of the board. According to police, nightly win nings in the games sometimes total $1,000. Senator Chavez to Speak At K. ot C.
