J., May 26 —Gov. Dewey of New York came back East today and moved directly Into the task of recapturing his one-time strength in New Jersey. The candidate for the Republican presidential nomination described his Western tour as “the most en joyable campaign that I have ever undertaken.” He said he had "never felt better—mentally or physically.” The Governor made those com ments at Cleveland as he boarded his train en route to Trenton where he scheduled a meeting with Jersey’s Republican leaders and national convention delegates. In both preceding presidential election years—four years ago when Gov. Dewey won the nomination ; and in 1940 when it went to Wendell Willkle—the New York Governor had almost unanimous support of ! the New Jersey delegation. Today he could claim, like Sen ator Taft of Ohio and Harold E. Stassen, no more than the “friendly neutrality” the Republican organi zation has offered all candidates. The delegation, pieagea to uov. Driscoll as a favorite son, has yet to decide on its course of action after the first ballot. However, many leaders who four years ago were for Gov. Dewey are reported leaning now toward Senator Vandenberg. Unlike Mr. Stassen and Senator Taft, who visited the State re cently, Gov. Dewey planned no for mal "speech. The day's program called for a meeting with Gov. Dris coll, a news conference, a luncheon with editors and publishers, a re ception at the Princeton home of former Gov. Walter E. Edge, and an off-the-record dinner with delegates and alternates.
