Long-Lines Operators Resume Wage Parley; U.S. Hearings Delayed By th« Associated Press NEW YORK, May 26.—Contract negotiations affecting 25,000 long distance telephone workers which were broken off last week have been resumed. The resumption of the talks yesterday halted proceedings of a presidential fact-finding board, at least for the time being. When the board opened its session yesterday, officials of both the American Telephone & Telegraph Co. and the CIO American Union of Telephone Workers asked for a few hours to discuss the matter. Board Will Stand By. Then both sides announced they had agreed to continue direct bar gaining through June 7. If a new contract has not been worked out by that time, the par ties agreed to report the dispute back to the board, which was set up. by President Truman May 18 after negotiations collapsed. The head of the board, Prof. Sumner H. Slichter of Harvard University, said the board was “glad to delay the opening of the hear ings.” He said he would ask the Presi dent to extend the date set for a report to him. 30-Cent Raise Sourht. Union and company officials met for two hours yesterday with a Federal mediator. A company spokesman said the meeting was a "preliminary” session. Traffic Deaths Bring Warning in Maryland Sy th* Associated Press BALTIMORE, May 26. —The Maryland Traffic Safety Commis sion yesterday reported there were 29 traffic deaths in the State dur ing April, then issued this waning to motorists: “Always be on the alert for pedes trians, children at play, old folks and drunks.’’ The commission reported 14 of the fatalities were pedestrians. “Some of them had been drink ing,” it said. "Many of them were careless.” Baltimore city had only six fatali ties but was the scene of 421 injuries —more than half of 757 total for the State. Compared with the number of persons who lost their lives in auto mishaps during April of 1947, last month’s figure is a 12 per cent re duction. There were no fatal traffic ac cidents in 12 counties, including Calvert, Charles and Dorchester. But Anne Arundel’s death toll was eight, Prince Georges and Wicomico had three each and Queen Anne had two. The others had one each. The month’s figures brought the total of traffic dead in 1948 to 90. Admiral Smith Collapses Addressing Trade Body By the Associated Press QUINCY, Mass., May 26—Vice Admiral William W. Smith, 60, chairman of the Maritime Commis sion, collapsed last night while he was addressing the annual meeting of the Quincy Chamber of Com merce. Admiral Smith slumped to the floor while delivering a talk before 250 persons and was taken to the Quincy Hospital where his condi tion was described as "good.” He was released from the hospital a short while later and returned to his Boston hotel room. Soviet to Send Envoys To Israel, Indonesia ly th« Associated Prass MOSCOW, May 26.—The Soviet press published without comment today an announcement that Rus sia has agreed to exchange diplo matic representatives with Israel. Also published was an announce ment that Russia and the Indo nesian republic have agreed, after conversations in Prague, to ex change consuls. There was no edi torial comment. Col. Edward Steidtmann, 66, professor of geology and mineralogy at Virginia Military Institute for 25 years, died yesterday at his home here. Col. Steidtmann joined the VMI faculty in 1923, coming here from the University of Wisconsin. He received his bachelor's, master’s and doctor's degrees at Wisconsin Uni versity. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Berthe Steidtmann; two daughters and three sons, one of whom is Lt. Col. Robert F. Steidtmann, U. S. M. C., Washington. S424 Pelley Deposition Plea Denied; Sentence Stands By fht Auaciatad Pract INDIANAPOLIS, May 26. —Wil liam Dudley Pelley’s petition for permission to take depositions from 35 present and former Government officials and two newspaper colum nists was denied in Federal Court yesterday. The former Silver Shirt leader’s petition for a writ of habeas corpus also was denied by Judge Walter C. Lindley of Danville, 111. Pelley is serving a 15-year sentence for sedition. Pelly contended the depositions he sought would show his convic tion was obtained by an adminis tration which he said "solicited war* by enactment of the Lend-Lease Act and repeal of the Neutrality Act.
