Study Ranks District
Second in Diagnosis
Of New Cancer Cases
More new cases of cancer are
being diagnosed in the District than
in 10 of 11 other communities of
comparable size throughout the
country, according to a recent study
by the National Cancer Institute.
The study showed that one of
every 207 District residents either
is under treatment for cancer or
under observation for ailments
treated previously. The only other
city among those surveyed with a
higher rate was New Orleans, of
ficials said.
Rates Rise in Decade.
Rates also are considerably higher
than those shown in a survey 10
years ago, but this rise was credited
to increased cancer detection facili
ties. A report on the survey, pre
pared by Dr. H. F. Dorn, statistics
section chairman of the institute,
also showed the lowest reported rate
of cases was among the lowest eco
nomic group, indicating that poor
people are less likely to have con
sulted doctors.
These findings, officials said in
dicate education programs should
be aimed more directly at lower
income and educational groups.
The survey showed that, while
cancer rates are 25 per cent higher
among women than men, the can
cer death rate for men is 10 per
cent higher. The reason, officials
said, is that cancer in men is harder
to detect.
Death Percentage Cited.
Victims of the disease between
the ages of 25 and 44 have the best
chance for survival, the institute
said.
The study showed that 20 per
cent of white women die within
six months after cancer is diag
nosed and that the rate for white
men is 33 per cent. About 33 per
cent of colored women, however, die
within six months after diagnosis
and the rate for colored men is 50
per cent. Explanation for the dif
ferences. officials explained, prob
ably is that the disease is more ad
vanced when diagnosed in the col
lored group.
