Shepard A final showdown was believed de veloping today In the year-old effort of Interior Secretary Krug to oust the Navy from possession of the former polo field In West Potomac Park, where nearly 1,400 enlisted men and women are housed In tem porary barracks. kfr. Park officials fear that any further delay would endanger plans for reconstructing Washington’s famous public rose garden on the site, it was said. In the latest exchange of notes between the two departments, Un dersecretary W. John Kenney of the Navy reminded the Interim- De partment that, since last March, the Navy has concluded that all its presently owned facilities should be retained for the present and indi cated the Navy Intends to maintain this policy, if it can 1*49 Date Suggested. "I am strongly of the opinion that the continued availability of the West Potomac Park to the Navy would be an economic aa well as a material benefit to the Govern ment,” he wrote. “It Is earnestly requested that the Department of the Interior give consideration to the possibility of authorizing con tinued use of- this land by the Navy until at least June 30, 1949. “The Department of the Navy realizes the Department of the In terior has made its plans for dredg ing operations and reconstruction of the rose garden in the West Potomac Park area, and also realizes that no legal limitation has been placed on use of the land.
