PTA Adopts 4-Point
Action Program in
Closing Convention

CLEVELAND. May 27 —Delegates
. to the convention of the National
Congress of Parents and Teachers
were homeward bound today,
pledged to Implement In their
local communities the four-point
program which has been the theme
of the annual convention here.
As the three-day convention
closed last night, delegates adopted
a platform for 1948-1949. It was a
re-affirmation of policies followed
this year. They also heard Mar
garet Bourke-White, associate edi
tor of Life magazine and noted
photographer, describe her personal
experiences in India during the
last, two years.
The four-point program of the
PTA is an action plan in these
fieids—school education, world un
derstanding, health, and parent and
family education. It advocates:
The quality of the teaching pro
* fession be raised through higher
standards for teachers.
Teachers salaries be raised and
Include adequate tenure and retire
ment provisions.
Scholarships be encouraged to
attract competent young people into
the teaching profession.
The public school system be ex
tended through the junior college
level and adult education recog
nized as a part, of that system.
Federal aid to education be given
to public schools so that an ade
quate education can be provided
every child.
Health projects be encouraged and
aupport be given bills in Congress
to provide funds for extending pub
lic health facilities in communities.
Both parents and children be edu
cated to the essentials of a healthy
home life, to bring about a stronger
family life needed in the United
6t.ates.
Reading, radios and motion pic
tures be recognized as powerful in
fluences in molding character, and
parents see that good books and
good programs are available to chil
dren.
PTA promotion of unswerving
faith and support of the United Na
tions as the way to world peace.
Understanding of people in for
eign lands beginning on the local
level.
At an earlier session yesterday,
Raymond Walsh, radio commentator
and former member of the National
Labor Relations Board, warned the
delegates that the Mundt bill, spon
sored by the House Un-American
Activities Committee as a way to
control the Communist Party, is
"both dangerous and un-American.”
He criticized the "current panic"
over Communist issue.
"The bill will contribute to this
panic," he declared# "It will vic
timize the innocent. It will fiot end
the Communist movement, and it
will subvert our elementary civil
freedom to think.”
A weekly plane service has been
started between Baghdad, Iraq, and
Karachi, in Pakistan.
