'47 Model Jap Beetle Stalls
Truck of Horticulturist Foe
Japanese beetle trouble came early
for Prank 8. Pohanka of Burnt Mills
Hills. Silver Spring, this year—but it
was a 1947 model beetle.
Mr. Pohanka, an avid amateur
horticulturist, numbers the Japanese
beetle menace as one of his greatest
problems when it comes to raising
his prize-winning roses. But the
beetle season is still some weeks off,
so Mr. Pohanka expected anything
but the following troubles, all caused
by one little insect:
On Saturday, two of his employes
were driving a pick-up truck from
his garage at 1128 Twentieth street
N.W. to his home. Suddenly, 'the
motor sputtered and died. Roadside
first aid failed to get any response
from the motor, so the truck was
towed back to Washington.
Here mechanics worked all yester
day in a futile effort to find the
cause of the trouble. But the engine,
which is only a year old, refused to
start.
The men started to take the ve
hicle apart. After they had taken off
the gas tank, they started exploring
j the feeder line into the carburetor.
At the head of the line, wedged in a
gas line fitting, they found the
trouble.
A perfectly preserved Japanese
beetle apparently had fallen in the
tank last year and finally was drawn
into the narrow entrance in the fit
ting. No gas could enter the car
buretor.
“At least, this serves to remind me
to get prepared early for this year’s
beetle onslaught," said a rueful Mr.
Pohanka.
