SUN VALLEY, IDAHO.—PRESIDENT GETS A LIFT—President Truman took a ride on the ski lift here yesterday and obligingly waved a greeting with his hat as a photographer snapped this picture. The President paused in his cross-country tour to rest for a while at this resort. Mr. and Mrs. Truman and Margaret are quartered in the personal cottage of W. Averell Harriman, United States Ambassador-at-large. —AP Wirephoto. Truman Train Heads Into Montana Today For Talk at Butte By Joseph A. Fox Star Staff Corrmtpondent IN IDAHO WITH PRESIDENT TRUMAN, June 8. — President Truman was swinging through Idaho at the head of a motor cade today, with a couple of wayside talks and some sight seeing on a four-hour itinerary, which was to take him through Craters of the Moon National Monument and Lost River Val ley. ' He left Sun Valley at 8 a.m. for the 174-mile drive to Idaho Falls. There the President catches up j with his special train. Then he' moves into Butte, Mont., for a three-hour stay tonight, when he will make another talk. Then he goes on to Washington State. Mr. Truman rounded out his first day in Idaho with an overnight stop at the Union Pacific’s stylish Sun Valley resort. He and Mrs. Truman and Miss Margaret Truman were quartered in the “cottage,” main tained at Sun Valley by Ambassador W. Averell Harriman. In the course of the visit, the President had a chance to sample some of the en tertainment afforded at the resort. Rides Ski Lift. He rode a ski lift—a chain of aerial chairs which carries skiers up to the head of the courses—taking the 1,200-foot ride up Dollar Moun tain, where there is no snow now. He tried his hand at casting, using j a plug instead of a fly, which is j equivalent to fishing without a hook.! 'He also fired three shots on the' skeet range without disturbing the targets. He also visited stables, kennels! and a barbecue layout before re turning to the cottage for dinner. ' Asked if he enjoyed the ski-lift ride, the President commented, “Oh, its all right; a little slow, but fast enough for me.” His activities, however, provided a field day for photographers. Mrs. Truman and Miss Truman' tried out the longer ski ride on Mount Baldy. At Arco, today, the President was to be greeted by | former Gov. C. A. Bottolfsen and a local delegation and was to be invited to stop for a talk and hand shakes. Idaho Falls is the scene; of another talk, and there may be: more. New Attack on Congress Seen. The President probably will hit hard on the theme he dealt with in his speech in Pocatello yesterday morning, when he lit into Congress for cutting reclamation and power development funds—an important issue out here. He said there are "some people in these United States who would like to restore the: Insull era, when they put the wel-' fare of the few promoters above' From Now York doily oxcapt Wednesday. Afterward, the President leaves for Spokane and tomorrow’s sched uled visit to Grand Coulee Dam. The presidential special arrived at Ketchum, near Sun Valley, at 1:30 p.m. yesterday. Idaho's Re publican Gov. C. A. Robins and Mrs. Robins, greeted the Trumans, along with some 200 or 300 local people. The Democratic State chairman, Dan J. Cavanaugh, who has just been named to the national com mittee, also came in to see the President. Other Leaders Visit.
