RE. 1988 Ural Estate tn Atl Its Brnnc/irs Two Courts Absolved Taylor in Paternity Case, Lawyer Says By Amo ’ J Pftil PARIS, June 12.—Myron C. Tay lor’s lawyer says two courts already have found that Mr. Taylor, presi dential envoy to the Vatican, is not the father of an illegitimate daugh ter. Mrs. Eunice Walterman, 35, of Chicago, claimed to be Mr. Taylor’s illegitimate child in a suit filed in Federal Court here Thursday. She asked a court declaration that she was, and $2,000,000 damages from Mr. Taylor and Joseph A. Bennett.; whom she-accused of conspiring to! I keep her status quiet. Joseph M.- Hartfield. New York; ; lawyer, said here last night he had j defended Mr. Taylor against a. similar suit in New York and Mrs. Walterman had lost that case in the original court and an appeal court. Mr. Hartfield said the trial had been held behind closed doors and at his request the courts had sealed the papers. The lawyer, in Paris on business. ! said Mrs. Walterman's claim that ; Mr. Taylor was her father was ! found “wholly false and without merit.” He said Judge John C. Knox of the United States District Court in New York threw the case out in May, 1947, and was upheld on appeal by a United States Circuit Court May 31, 1948. His story of the case: Mrs. Walterman said Mr. Taylor met her mother, a Harlem theater cashier named Margaret Nichols, in New York in the summer of 1911 and vanished on learning the girl was pregnant. She showed a birth i certificate listing him as her father | and giving his age as 23 when she was born. Mr. Hartfield showed that Mr. Taylor spent most of that summer on his yacht or on the Maine coast, where he underwent an appendix operation, and was 37 then instead of 23. GM Plans 7-Day Layoff Of 2,500 at Baltimore •y th* Associated Pros* BALTIMORE, June 12. —Nearly 2,500 workers at the two General Motors plants In Baltimore will be laid off for seven days beginning June 21, plant officials said. The layoff will affect all 1,500 em ployes at the Chevrolet assembly plant and all 1,000 workers at the Fisher body plant. A GM spokesman in Detroit blamed the steel shortage “due to the coal walkout” for the layoff of 200,000 workers there. Officials here said they expect steel shipments to be cut off next week, necessitating curtailment of operations the fol lowing week. Featherstone Estate Destroyed by Fire Featherstone, 23-room home of George W. Herring near Wood bridge, Va., was destroyed in a $50, 000 fire yesterday. In addition to the main house, a nearby utility house also was burned to the ground. Firemen managed to save a nearby bam. The Are recalled a tragedy which occurred at the house about a quarter of a century ago, when the former owner, Frank Chambers, killed himself and his teen-age daughter took her life after hear ing of her father’s death. Mr. Chambers, a wealthy New Yorker, had developed Featherstone into an outstanding dairy farm. Firemen said they believed the blaze was started by a short circuit. It burned from about 5:30 to 8:30 pjn. Mr. Herring and his wife were home when the Are broke. The Ave Are companies which responded were handicapped in fighting the blaze by lack of water. The house was of frame construction and was situated on top of a high hill over looking the Potomac River. The Occoquan, Occoquan Work house, Fort Belvoir, Penn-Daw and Dumfries-Triangle Are companies responded. Mr. Herring bought the estate after the Chambers tragedy. He has been operating it as a cattle ranch. He is retired from the Wallace & Herring lumber Arm in Alexandria and is a former member of the Vir ginia House of Delegates. New '48 Marks Seen •y th« Associated Press NEW YORK, June 12.—National and local advertising in newspapers set new records last year and are headed for new records again in 1948 foe the third straight year, it was shown in the annual report of Alfred B. Stanford, director of the Bureau of Advertising of fthe Amer ican Newspaper Publishers Associa tion. Newspapers are showing sharper gains in national'advertising, the report showed, than magazines, net work radio, spot radio, outdoor posters or farm journals. Magazines have been the leader in that field since 1942, but news papers are cutting down the lead. National advertising volume in magazines last year was $416,000,000 | with newspapers second at $369,000, 1000. Newspapers showed the sharp ; est gains and took 31 per cent of j the national advertising dollar, the i highest point since 1941, while magazines for the first time since i 1941 showed a slight decline in their share. Newspapers’ local advertising rose I $93,000,000 in 1947 to a record high of $721300,000. At the same time, the report said, newspapers’ unit circulation hit an all-time high with circulation in come reaching a record $907385,000 in 1947. Mr. Stanford, however, cautioned on local advertising: "Retailers, like newspapers, face -lowering profit margins. Hence there is a more critical need than ever for retailers to get the most efficient performance possible out of their investment in newspaper space." Truman Exempts Miller From Retirement at ICC President Truman yesterday issued an executive order exempting Carroll Miller, a member of the Interstate Commerce Commission, from com pulsory retirement. Mr. Miller, 73, will complete 15 years’ service as an ICC' commis sioner Monday. Without the ex ecutive order, he would have been forced to retire then under pro visions of the law for retirement of anyone over 70 who has had 15 years’ service in the Government. The President’s order exempts M. Miller from compulsory retirement for an indefinite period, not to ex tend beyond his present term of office which will expire on December 31, 1953.
