The vessels were transferred from | the United States to Turkey under i the European Recovery Program, and the Turkish Ambassador said they will act as guardians of Turk-! ish “independence and territorial j I integrity.” Ambassador H. R. Baydur ac cepted the eight United States Navy minesweepers, a repair ship, a gaso line tender and a net layer in trans fer ceremonies held at the Norfolk | Naval Station. ■ i, Mr. Baydur pledged that the “ap preciation of the friendly solicitude ^of America in the defense of Turkey I will never fade from the hearts of Turkish people who know the value j of true friendship.” The ships, he said, are “at the service of the peace. The United! States Government has given them to us for that purpose and on that ! understanding, and we have re-: ceived them for that purpose and on that understanding.” When the ships sail for Turkey today they will be manned by Turk ish crews which have been trained ,in this country for several months ; in the operation of the vessels. I In delivering the vessels to Am bassador Baydur, Rear Admiral C. E. Olsen, commander of the Norfolk Naval Base and Naval Station: said that the United States is pledged under the European Recovery Pro gram to assist Turkey, “as we are to assist the other participating na tions, in the hope that this concord of Democratic nations may stave off the threat of envelopment and submission which hangs over them." Negro Girl Scout Camp Closed; 'Raid' by Robed Band Reported By the Associated Press BESSEMER, Ala., June 12—Two white women reported to police a >and of hooded, robed men entered i Negro Girl Scouts camp where hey were instructors and ordered hem ‘‘to get out of town.” Circuit Solicitor Howard Sullinger ;aid the women, Misses'Katrine Mickey of Birmingham and Eliza jeth Ijams of Knoxville, Tenn.. told urn about 100 men; all dressed in white, robes and high pointed hoods, nvaded the camp about 11 p.m. rhursday. Six or eight men entered the tent where they were sleeping and roused hem, they said. A spokesman for he intruders said it was "not >roper” for white women to be with n boundaries of a camp with Negro women, Mr. Sullinger quoted the women as saying. After searching their baggage and pocketbooks, the women said, the men told them to "get out of town within 24 hours.” They were not molested otherwise. Chief Deputy Sheriff Clyde Morris said his office would investigate the case thoroughly. About 21 young Negro women were attending a training course at the camp which opened June 2. rhe.v were unaware of the incident! until told of it late yesterday when the course was canceled. Magrjider MacDonald in the shotgun death yesterday of Isaac Page, 61, colored, of 1707', Marion court N.W. Police said Page presumably placed a shotgun on a ledge in a shed behind his home and then pressed the trigger with a nail! which had been driven through a broom handle.
