Shipping Strike Threat Fades as Unions Bow To Three Injunctions By tbt Associated Press NEW YORK, June 15.—The threat of an immediate Nation-wide mari time strike faded today in thd wake of injunctions obtained by Federal attorneys in New York, Cleveland and San Francisco. The CIO National Maritime Union, largest of seven unions in volved in disputes with shipowners, was the first to capitulate to a court order. Uniorf officers sent out instruc tions to all members directing that they obey an order from Federal Judge John W. Clancy in New York ordering both sides in the dispute to maintain the status quo for a period of 10 days, wltn a iurtner hearing set for June 18. Judge Clancy’s order covered the East and Gulf Coasts. Similar orders coveming the West Coast and the Great Lakes were issued by Federal judges in San Francisco and Cleve land. Unions Assail Injunctions. In San Francisco, five maritime unions last night denounced the restraining order as “a straight out strike-breaking attempt for which President Truman must take full and odious responsibility.” Although the unions did not im mediately rescind strike instructions, there were unofficial indications that the court order would be obeyed. The unions pledged a “fight to have this restraining order lifted so that we may go ahead without unfair governmental interference and reach a just and equitable settlement with our employers.” Chester Young, vice president of the NMU in charge of thq Great Lakes District, said seamen already on strike against eight tankers will be ordered back to work. The order of Joseph Curran, NMU president, to union members to obey the injunction was backed up by the New York membership of the union at a stormy meeting last night in a 2-to-l vote. Hiring Halls to Continue. Mr. Curran said maintenance of the present status meant that union hiring halls would continue in oper ation. The hiring hail, under which the union supplies its members to man ships, has been the core of dispute which resulted in a threat to strike on expiration of contracts today. Seven unions with more than 100,000 members are involved. The three' unions named in Judge Clancy’s order, affecting the East and Gulf Coasts, are the NMU, the Marine Engineers Beneficial Associ ation and the American Radio As sociation, all CIO. Other unions involved are the CIO International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen's Union, the CIO Marine Cooks and Stewards, the AFL International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and the Fire men and Oilers, an independent group. These four operate on the Pacific Coast as does the MEBA. At Los Angeles, Harry Bridges, president of the International Long" shoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union, addressed an overflow crowd of 3,500 maritime workers last night. Mr. Bridges said, “We will not openly defy the injunction at this time, but if the shipowners or the 'Will be Bald? tf-iae flfeaAA> pi&m How? fPHE road to baldness is well marked by such danger signals as falling hair, itching scalp, and dandruff. Laws ol District Court has set June 23 for a hearing on the controversy be tween the National Association ol University Women and the Wash ington branch over the local group’s membership regulations. The hearing had been set for today, but counsel for both sides agreed to a postponement. Delay in deposition taking was given as a reason for extending the time. The chapter has brought suit against the national association in an effort to keep the national group from excluding the branch from the organization.
