The incident, involving the United States and Yugoslav governments, is the result of the i five soldiers taking a swim across an inter national bound ary where they were picked up by local police and taken to j jail. The Falls Pvt. Foster. Church man. a termer sailor, is Pvt. Gordon J. Poster, 33, who has a wife, four sons and a daughter in Balti 1 more His mother, Mrs. Mary J. Poster, lives at 1013 Madison lane, Falls Church, with a daughter, Mrs. James E Doyle and her family. An other of Pvt. Foster's sisters, Mrs. R. P. Sandford, lives at 207 South Lee street, Falls Church. Not Yet Released. The State Department told the story—an 'ole swimmin’ hole’’ yarn with an international twist." The five men were arrested in the Yugo slav area of the free territory of Trieste June 16 and have not yet been released. The State Depart ment said they have been held too long. It ordered Ambassador Cav endish Cannon at. Belgrade to de liver an indignant protest and de mand freedom for the men. In addition to all this the story has a spy angle—propaganda spy, that is—which would only be pos | sible at some such place as the incredible city of Trieste. Trieste 'is the little ship-building city at the head of the Adriatic which both Italy and Yugoslavia tried to get' out of the satellite peace confer ences a year or more ago. Unable to make a Solomon's de cision as to who should get It, the Big Four powers decided to make the city and some miles around a "free territory.” Today it is any thing but "free,” being occupied by thousands of Yugoslav troops on one side and thousands of British and American troops on the other. Feelings run high. Soldiers Used Boat. On June 15 the five Americans decided to go swimming. In addi tion to Pvt. Foster, they were listed as T/4 George C. Wilson, Southern Pines. N. C.; T 5 Augustine Santana. New York City; T/5 Jarvis L. Saul nier, Manchester, N. H., and Pvt. Archie M. Van Why, Route 1, Stroudsburg, Va. Press Officer Michael J. McDer mott said the soldiers entered the Yugoslav zone in a small boat and added, "Their purpose was merely to go swimming at a beach at Capo d'Isrtia.’’ While they were swimming, the Yugoslavs seized the whole group and took them off to jail. American military chiefs immediately began demanding the return of the men. The Yugoslavs told the Americans not to worry, that they would be sent home "unharmed" in due course. Mr. McDermott said the protest and direct demand for release to the Yugoslav government at Bel grade were determined on because of the "prolonged detention." Spy Angle Develops. Meanwhile, the spy angle has) developed. A few days ago, accord-; ing to the State Department, a Communist newspaper in Trieste published stories that the five men were espionage agents. This ties in with Yugoslav propaganda charges that British and American soldiers FOXHALL VILLAGE Overlooking Beautiful Pork 1624 44th St. N.W. Mr. McDermott stressed in this connection that the purpose of the five ‘was merely to go swimming." Asked why they chose a beach across the Yugoslav zone boundary. Mr. McDermott said he didn’t know, but “perhaps it was a hot day in Trieste.” The Communist paper, for a rea son best know to itself, gave its report of the incident a festive air by publishing a picture- of the five i soldiers in detention. It did not [show them *looking glumly out of barred, windows. It showed them drinking beer with their guards.
