And Prices; Plans for
Strike Are Called Off
By th« Associated Press
PITTSBURGH, June 26—The
Aluminum Co. of America is boost
ing wages—and the prices of its
products.
The company announced last
night it reached a two-year agree
ment with the CIO United Steel
workers which provides a 10-to-16
cents-an-hour increase for 18,000
production workers has bargaining
rights.
Alcoa made the same offer to
6,500 other workers at four plants
where the AFL Aluminum Workers
have bargaining rights.
The rapid-fire development—fol
lowing intervention of Government
mediators—assured continued pro
duction of aluminum vitally needed
for the country’s defense program.
Strike Plan Called Off.
The Steelworkers immediately
called off plans for a strike at mid
night tomorrow. The AFL post
poned plans for a strike—called for
the same time—pending a vote on
the offer by its locals.
Alcoa said its basic price of
aluminum will be increased 1 cent
per pound—the first such boost in
11 years. It wil bring the price of;
99 per cent aluminum pig to 15
cents per pound and of the large
size 99 per cent ingot to 16'cents
a pound.
The present hourly wage rate of
Alcoa’s production workers is about
$1 an hour. The Steelworkers orig
inally had asked a 12 cent an hour
increase and the company countered
with an 8 per cent offer which it Is
said amounted to about 10 cents
an hour.
Workers covered by the new steel
workers pact are at Alcoa plants in
Alcoa, Tenn.; New Kensington, Pa.;
Edgewater, N. J.; Mobile, Ala.;
