This was shown today in a survey conducted by the American News paper Publishers’ Association. Some of these work stoppages by locals of the AFL International Typographical Union began almost three years ago. Others occurred in 1946 and 1947. Eight newspapers were struck by the printers this year. The strikes are continuing. The association said that al though handicapped by loss of their union composing room employes, with one exception the newspapers have continued to publish daily edi tions with little interruption. Some are using a photoengraving process to circumvent their composing rooms while others continue the use j of normal printing methods. The work stoppage resulted from disputes between the publishers and the ITU over wages and contracts. Winnipeg striae Began in ism. The oldest strike is that in Winni peg, Manitoba, Canada, where the : printers walked out at two news I paper plants November 11,1945. TTie ■ oldest in the United States is that I in St. Petersburg, Fla., involving two publications. It began November 30, 1945. In Springfield, Mass., the morning Republican suspended daily publi | cation but continued to circulate the Sunday Republican. The Morning Union and Evening News, under the same ownership, are publishing] daily. The Springfield Evening Union suspended publication. The pub lishers said this suspension was be cause of a strike by a mechanical union, not the printers strike. The largest single group of print ers on strike is in Chicago where 1,500 men walked out of five major dailies eight monUi ago. Neither the American Newspaper Publishers Association nor the ITU would estimate financial losses since the strikes began, but other sources placed the losses in wage and j revenues from advertising "in the millions.'’ The ANPA said contracts have been signed since January 1, 1948,1 between member newspapers and [ ITU locals in Columbia, S.
