Rain, the Fight, and Republicans
Put a Dent in Theaters
By Jay Carmody
Rain and the Republicans were almost more than theater business
could bear this week. Especially the rain. The Republicans, after all,
have been around a long time and are inevitable. They come and go.
A man can reconcile himself to that.
It was the rain which came and stayed, and kept holding people at
their television and radio sets listening in vain for the Louis-Walcott
fight. Show business went to the dogs. This is bad. Every one in the
theater minus snow Dusiness is
something that should not happen
to a dog.
Nobody minded on Wednesday
night, the first scheduled for the
fight. After all, patrons of the
theater and movies are supposed to
be weE-rounded citizens whose in
terest in politics and pugilism is
even shared by those who run the
aters and movie palaces. But the
rain made it all such a waste, of
their time on the part of the dis
appointed fans, of their money in
the eyes of those who have show
boxofflces.
It was Thursday night that the
latter began to crack, to take sudden
turns for the neurotic.
This meant three consecutive
nights given up to Dewey, Taft, Mar
tin, Louis and Walcott.
Show' business thought that was
too much. It always will.

A man can find it pretty remiss
of himself not to go thumbing
through the files before saying that,
so far as he knows, "The Marquise"
never played in Washington before
its current appearance at Olney.
Several readers with better memo
ries recall it having been here in
the middle 20s with Billie Burke in
the role now occupied by LKlian
Gish. One of them, remembers it
with exclamation points, starting
with:
"What a cast! And Reginald
Owen, young and slender, and oh!
so charming. I do not remember
who acted the parts of the son and
daughter, but I was fascinated with
the way it was done. X have often
wondered whatever happened to the
play, and why no one acted it again.
But there really was no one like
Billie Burke 20 years ago, nor ever
will be!”
True, but as a Miss Gish man,
there will be no one like her either.

No one, needless to say (except
when a column has to be filled*
ever recovers from the experience
of having been an actor. One more
evidence of it is Irene Rich's state
of mind since John Ford induced
her to come out of retirement for a
role in “Fort Apache." The picture,
as Ford had promised it would,
proved to Miss Rich that acting was
as much fun as ever, and to the
public that Irene was still quite a
performer.
The result is that Miss Rich is
now looking around for a role on
the legitimate stage, an experience
that hitherto has eluded her.
Most of her time recently has been
spent as a rancher in California, a
cattle rancher with a herd of prize
Herefords.

your vision will not be evident in

Mature Finds
Schary the Man
He Gan Trust
By Sheiloh Graham
Victor Mature calls with the news
that he has just met Dore Schary,
the RKO production boas, for the
first time and says, “I'll do anything [
he asks me to. I trust the guy im
plicitly.” . j
Dore now is asking Victor to star
in "Mr. Whiskers,” as well as “In
terference.” After that Vic hops
over to C. B. De Mille for "Samson
and Delilah.” The price C. B. and
his studio are paying for Vic is said
to be $200,000.
Alfred Hitchcock says no. he is
not running into too much trouble
in getting his “Under Capricorn”
picture going in London. "As a mat
ter of fact, were doing fine. We
are getting the new Metro studio to
make the picture.” "But why not
do the picture in Hollywood?” I ask
him. “Patriotism, my dear," replies
Hitch.
Deanna Durbin's “Western Story”!
now has been postponed until Sep- j
tember. This gives Deanna lots of
time to straighten out her marital
tangle with Felix Jackson. It's safe
to predict now that Deanna will
not re-sign with Universal-Interna
tional when her current contract
expires.
You can bet that David Niven's
wife will visit him at least once
while David is in England starring
in "The Scarlet Pimpernel.” He
will be over there for five months
and that is too long, in David's'
opinion, for him to be parted from'
his very attractive Swedish bride.

Richard Greene has been asked
to be the. lead with Myrna Loy in
the picture she is making in London
with Sir Ralph Richardson. Greg
ory Ratoff is directing, and it looks
like we have lost the voluble ex
Russian to Europe.
Peggy Cummins and Bob Tap
linger aren’t going together like they
used to. Too bad because Peggy's
mother told me that Bob was one
of the few men in Hollywood that
she felt happy in allowing her
daughter to date. Bob now is woo
ing Betty Underwood, who already
has had a fantastic movie career.
Betty, a New York model, was flown
