Lindsey, re tired cavalry officer who taught horsemanship to World War II military leaders during their West Gen. Lindsey. Point days, died of a heart at* tack yesterday at Walter Reed Hospital. He was! 77. A veteran of 42 years of ac tive cavalry service before h i s retirement in 1934, Gen. Lindsey was one of the first Army officers to ap ply cavalry tac tics in modem mechanized war itue. As cavalry officer and senior in structor at West Point from 1912 to 1916, the general, himself con sidered one of the Army’s most brilliant riders, revised the acad emy's riding manuel and was the first to introduce polo at the academy. Taught Eisenhower and Bradley. Since the cavalry was an integral part of the Army’s tactical forces at that time, all cadets at the academy were required to learn horsemanship. During this period, the future Gens. Eisenhower, Brad ley and Clark were among the ca dets who studied under Gen. Lind sey, and in later years reminisced about the stemess of his discipline. A six-footer. Gen. Lindsey prided himself on his military bearing and on keeping in trim. Of him, it was once said that he was the only general in the Army who could still get into his lieutenant’s uniforms. He used to say he gave up playing polo at 60 because he was too old, and that he gave up squash at 65 because his friends asked him to, but that he never would give up horseback riding. He rode daily, through Washington parks in his later years, until his death. Served in China and Cuba. Gen. Lindsey was born at Irwin ton, Ga., on March 16, 1871, and en tered West Point when he was 17. On his graduation .in 1892. he was commissioned a second lieutenant in cavalry. He served in China in the Boxer Rebellion in 1901 and in the Cuban Pacification campaign in 1908. A series of appointments as cavalry officer and instructor at various domestic posts carried him to Fort Myer and West Point, among others. At the outbreak of World War I, Gen. Lindsey, then a lieutenant colonel, was picked for a field com mand and was the first officer as signed to the newly-activated 82nd Division, which was to win fame in two world wars. He commanded the 164th Infantry Brigade through the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne campaigns. After the war Gen. Lindsey served in the War Department on the gen eral staff for four years. In Janu ary, 1932, he was given command of Fort Knox, which he held until his retirement. He made his home here subsequently at the Army and Navy Club. Noted as Story-Teller. On the basis of his outstanding World War I record, Gen. Lindsey was promoted on the retired list in 1942 to major general. Gen. Lindsey was famous as a story-teller, and his ready wit be came legend in the Army. In con versation he represented himself as a die-hard cavalryman, -and de lighted in confounding his friends with the most reactionary com ments, even while he was seriously engaged in helping the Army get i mechanized. On the day of the Pearl Harbor , attack Gen. Lindsey declared in a ! loud voice at the Army and Navy ; Club that if the Army had had cav alry there, it would never have hap pened. Asked why, he replied, "Because every one would have been up feed ing the horses.” Son on Duty at Pentagon. Gen. Lindsey leaves a son, Col. Julian B. Lindsey, on duty at the Pentagon, who lives at 710 Princess street, Alexandria. His wife, the former Miss Hannah Broster of Montreal, died in 1905.
