Andrews Field Jets Set Ocean Mark to Bermuda in 2 Hours Four P-80 fighter planes yester day made the longest overwater flight yet completed by jet planes, the Strategic Air Command revealed today. The planes flew 830 miles from Andrews Field, Md., to Kindley Air base in Bermuda, 720 miles of it over water, in two hours. The flight was the first test of the feasibility of long overwater jet flights, Air Force headquarters revealed. Plans have been com pleted for trans-Atlantic hops by both the United States Air Force and the British Royal Air Force "to provide jet pilots with opera tional experience over long sea routes." A test flight from England to the United States will be made by six RAF jet planes tomorrow, weather permitting, it was said. This flight will be followed next Wednesday by an east-west hop in which 16 Air Force F-80s will fly to Germany. The planes are scheduled to take off from Selfridge Field, Mich., stopping at Presque Isle, Me.: Lab rador, Greenland and Iceland en route to Scotland. Air Force head quarters said the planes would go to Furstenfeldbruck, Germany, and remain in Europe "about two weeks.” They will be preceded by a weather-reporting plane and prob ably followed by another one. A rescue plane will accompany the flight, which will require 36 officers and 56 enlisted men. Notwithstanding these trial flights, the Navy made known today it would take the 36th jet fighter wing, now stationed in the Canal Zone, to Germany aboard the Air craft Carrier Sicily in mid-August. The wing will be assigned to Ger many at that time. Yesterday's flight was led by Lt. Col. Benjamin S. Preston. jr„ of Mobile. Ala. The other pilots were Capt. Howard M. Lane cf Auburn, Ala.: Capt. Harry R. Cas selman of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Capt. Henry S. Obiga of Utica, N. Y. , A Dutch concern is to sell tele vision broadcasting equipment in Argentina. IH E R Z 0 G' ! Studebaker resigned yesterday, came last night in the disclosure that Deputy Commission- j er E. B. Norton also has resigned. Dr. Norton submitted his resigna tion earlier this week, to become effective today. In a letter,of resig nation he released in Birmingham, Ala., he wrote to Dr. Studebaker: ; "I would be less than frank with you, however, if I should neglect to say that one major factor in my decision to leave the Office of Edu-; I cation has been my dissatisfaction and deep concern during recent weeks over the rate at which ^he political administration of the Fed eral Security Agency is taking over and concentrating in the office of the administrator so many of the functions, services and operating procedures heretofore placed in the Office of Education. “I cannot look with complacency! upon rapidly developing trends to subject the professional bureau that is the Office of Education to in creasing controls on the part of numerous persons planted in the structural organization at levels be tween the commissioner of educa tion and the administrator of the Federal Security Agency, to whom the commissioner is supposedly di rectly accountable." Dr. Norton, who is visiting a brother in Birmingham, said he will become executive director of the National Council of Chief State School Officials here. He formerly^ was Alabama State superintendent: of education. Resignations of Dr. Studebaker and Dr. Norton leave Associate Commissioner Edwin H. Miner in command.
