Busline Requests Hearing on Proposed Fare Rises The Alexandria, Barcroft & Wash ington Transit Co. today asked the Virginia State Corporation Commis sion to set a hearing on the bus line's request for increased intra state fares. General Manager B. C. May said the company, which operates be tween Washington and nearby Vir ginia, has been losing money since last year. He estimated the deficit would average $23,500 a month for the next year, unless fare revisions are granted. A petition for increases on inter state lines is pending before the Interstate Commerce Commission. Mr. May said the proposed boosts would be the first on the company’s intrastate lines since the firm was organized 27 years ago. Tne general manager blamed the deficit on increasing costs of opera tion and decreasing revenues. He declared that operating economies have been made but have not elimi nated the monthly deficits. Under the proposal the company would: Change the present 5-cent cash fare to two tokens for 15 cents, or 10 cents cash. Change the present 10-cent cash fare to 12% cents (one token and 5 cents) or 15 cents cash. Eliminate the use of the 12%-cent token in the 15, 20 and 25 cent cash fare zones. Cash fares In these zones would remain the same. Dr. Lee Grebler Named Columbia U. Beer Import Duty Bill Signed by President By the Associated Press President Truman yesterday signed a bill cutting the import duty on foreign beer, but imposing the same i excise tax now paid on domestic beer. The import duty is dropped from $7.75 a barrel to $3.87. However, the $8-a-barrel tax levied on domestic beer is put on imported beer for the first time. Heretofore, only the import duty has been paid on foreign beer, giving it a tax advantage of 25 cents over domestic beer. The total to be paid on foreign beer now, however, will be $11.87, and the total on domestic remains at $8.
