The company asked time to pre pare counter proposals to the union's j demands for contract benefits. „ I The union sought a 25-cent, across-the-board wage increase and a reduction in the work week from 48 to 40 hours. Under the current wake scales, the employes average “in the neigh borhood of $1.20 an hour,” Robert Walkinshaw, chairman of the union negotiating committee said. In addition to wage increases, Mr. Walkinshaw said the union is seek ing rule changes that will bring working conditions of maintenance of-equipment men to “modern stand ards of the industry.” He added that the company gave no reply to the union demand on limitation of the time iiy which counter proposals may be drafted. A spokesman for the railroad said “the negotiations are proceeding between the parties in accordance with the Railway Labor Act.” He said the company would make no comment beyond this statement. Average American Bought 18 Pounds of Candy in r47 By Hie Associated Press NEW YORK—Penny candy, fa vorite fare of the small fry, is mak ing a postwar comeback—but it sometimes costs two cents. That's what the 65th convention of the National Confectioners Asso ciation heard from George F. Du dick of the Commerce Department food section. "During 1947, the tide finally j turned for penny goods.'’ Mr. Dudick told the candy makers. "A victim ot sugar rationing in preceding years, one-cent goods were coming back to the show cases' in increas ing quantities, although their re appearance was sometimes in the garb of two-cent items.” Americans ate«an average of about 18 pounds of candy a person last year. Mr. Dudick said this was "two to three pounds per person greater than prewar.” To whole salers that meant $930,000,000, up 35 per cent from 1946’s previous record. Nevertheless, candy customers, began showing definite concern over price during 1947, the Government official said. Registration to Vote In Virginia Ends Saturday Saturday is the deadline in Vir ginia for registering to vote in the August 3 primaries. In Arlington, all precinct regis trars and the central registrar at j the courthouse will be on duty from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The Arlington League of Women Voters has announced that it will provide transportation to the homes of registrars for any one who will telephone Chestnut 0910. July 1.—The Detroit Tribune said today that Joe Louis is being urged to run for a seat on the city Council here. Louis announced his retirement as world's heavyweight champion last week and indicated he might be interested in politics. The Tribune, a semi-weekly Negro newspaper, said several Negro polit ical leaders and public officials have promised their support to Louis if he should seek a Council seat left vacant by a recent resignation. Truck Driver Freed In Death of Girl, 2 Gordon Burch, 32, of the 5100 block of Emerson street, Edmunston, Md., charged with unsafe backing in connection with a fatal traffic accident on June 1, was freed yes terday in Municipal Court, after a 7-year-old boy failed to qualify as a witness.
