Warren Flying Home
After Aide Is Stricken
By the Associated Press
NEW YORK, July I.—Gov. Ean
Warren was flying back to Cali
fornia today to take over the State's
affairs from his stricken Lieutenant
Governor.
On the way to the airport last
night, the Republican vice presi
dential candidate had a talk with
Herbert Brownell, jr., top adviser
to Gov. Thomas E. Dewey.
Gov. Warren, who cut short his
New York visit by three days be
cause of Lt. Gov. Goodwin J.
Knight’s illness, said his departure
would not delay the start of the
Republican presidential campaign.
He said he will confer , by telephone
with Gov. Dewey, his running mate.
The Dewey-Warren team will not
campaign jointly, Gov. Warren said,
because ‘‘that would be wasted man
power.”
California's Lieutenant Governor
underwent a serious operation in
Los Angeles Tuesday, and is ex
pected to be in a hospital at least |
six weeks.
Gov. Warren was accompanied!
home by Capt. Maurice Sparling,
California superintendent of banks.
Gov. Warren's wife and three I
daughtres will leave New York by
train on Saturday.
Archer Woodwell Retires;
Worked for U. S. 40 Years
Archer R. Woodweii, cartographic
engineer with the Public Roads Ad
ministration, began his retirement
today after more than 40 years',
service in the Government.
Head of the general map unit of
the roads agency, he joined the
Treasury Department in 1901 to take
charge of ventilation equipment,
later transferred to the Post Office
Department, and became associated
with the Public Roads Administra
tion in 1923.
He received gifts from associates
yesterday in a ceremony in the office
3f Deputy Commissioner H. E.
Hilts. Mr. Woodwell lives with his
wife at 33 Metropolitan avenue,
Kensington, Md.
Packing workers will uoey
Labor Law, Convention Told

CHICAGO, July 1.—The CIO
United Packinghouse Workers of
America, representing about 200,000
workers, says it will comply with
all provisions of the Taft-Hart
le.v Act.
‘Immediate" removal from office
will be the penalty to any union
officer who fails to comply, the union
voted at its fifth constitutional con
vention yesterday.
The Taft-Hartley law requires all
major union officials to sign non
Communist affidavits. Recently
Meyer Stern of New York, a district
| director, resigned rather than fol
low the UPW Executive Board's
! recommendation that the union
comply with the Taft-Hartley law.
However, Mr. Stern, whose district
six includes New England, New
York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania,
Maryland, West Virginia and Dela
ware, was re-elected yesterday. His
acceptance of re-election may in
dicate that he now is willing to sign
a non-Communist affidavit.
Under the plan adopted, vacancies
] occurring from removal of officers
for failing to comply with the law
'would be filled by the international
! Executive Board in the case of in
ternational officers and by special
convention in the case of district
officers.
Sailor Awaits Sentence
For Assault on Woman
Charles Pappas, 24, a Navy gun
ner's mate, today is awaiting sen
tence for assault with intent to
race a 27-year-old woman in her
room in the 900 block of Eighth
street S.E.
Pappas was convicted by a jury
! yesterday. At the same time he
was acquitted of a charge of house
breaking. f
The defendant fled the building
when his intended victim screamed
and another roomer gave chase.
Police, who were in the vicinity at
the time, were attracted by the
noise and captured Pappas as he
left the building.
Justice David A. Pine, who pre
sided at the trial, did not set a date
for sentencing.

Vice Consul Rendall Gets
Post in South Africa
Edwin C. Rendall, 3635 S street
N.W., vice consul at Hanoy, French i
Indo China, since October 30, 1946,
has been transferred to a similar
position at Johannesburg, South
Africa, the State Department an
nounced yesterday.
A native of Clinto, Iowa, Mr.
Rendall worked here with the Cen
sus Bureau, Labor Department and
the OPA before entering the for
eign service in 1946. He served
three years in the Army.

Sift dry ingredients together. Cut in Margarine.
Beat egg, add milk. Mix with dry ingredients. Turn
