Grocers: for torvieo, phono Uncob 1860 Navy Reduces Number Of Vice Admirals ty the Associated Press The Navy cut down the number of its vice admirals yesterday to meet today's legal deadline and to make room for promotions. Hereafter, one high-ranking offi cial said, the three-star rank will be given to officers holding (1) impor tant jobs afloat, (2) jobs with im portant international aspects and (3) jobs where rank parity with the other services is necessary. Only 22 vice admirals are allowed the Navy under its new promotion law which goes into effect today. The current flag list carries 24, but various changes Just revealed have cut down the three-star ranks to 20, and more shifts are in the making. Vice Admiral John H. Hoover of Great Palls, Mont., will retire today after almost 42 years of naval serv ice, it was announced. He is presi dent of the Naval Examining Board and during World War II com manded a carrier division in the Pacific, and also was commander of the Central Pacific Aircraft. Vice Admiral Charles H. McMorris turned over the chairmanship of the Navy's general board to Bear Ad jmlral John F. Shafroth, jr.; Admiral 'McMorris will take over as com ! mandant of the 14th Naval District and commander of the Hawaiian Sea Frontier August 25, but will be a rear admiral in his new assign ! ment. i Vice Admiral Daniel E. Kauff man, commandant of the 4th Naval District (Philadelphia), have been designated as rear admirals, their permanent rank. lad upensprooe lomorrow In Crash That Killed 43 By the Associated Press ASHLAND, Pa., July 1.—'The Civil Aeronautics Board tomorrow opens a hearing into the crash of a United Airlines DC-6 near Mount Carmel June 17 in which 43 persons lost their lives. The hearing tomorrow will be confined to hearing eye-witness ac counts of the crash. A hearing on the technical phases of the crash will be held later. Meanwhile, in Washington the possibility of pilot asphyxiation was reported to be under consideration in connection with the crash. A recording of the pilot’s final broadcasts showed that he shouted “fire” and said he was releasing carbon dioxide (fire extinguisher) in the front cargo hold. After various tests, the CAB has advised airline pilots to wear oxygen masks when releasing C02 fire ex tinguishers in fuselage compart ments such as cargo holds. Anglican Church Historian Selected in Maryland By the Associated Press BALTIMORE, July 1. — James Poster, director of the Maryland Historical Society, yesterday an nounced the selection of the Rev. Dr. Nelson W. Rightmyer to write a history of the Anglican Church In Maryland. Dr. Rightmyer is assistant profes sor of ecclesiastical history at the divinity school of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. The project is to be published by the Maryland Diocesan Library and is being supported by the State His torical Society. Judge Raedy Honored By Outgoing Jury Panel An outgoing jury panel of 40 men and women, which has served in Municipal Court for the last month, | paid tribute to Judge Ellen K.; Raedy at the close of the court session yesterday.
