In Crash That Killed 43
By the Associated Press
ASHLAND, Pa., July 1.—'The Civil
Aeronautics Board tomorrow opens
a hearing into the crash of a United
Airlines DC-6 near Mount Carmel
June 17 in which 43 persons lost
their lives.
The hearing tomorrow will be
confined to hearing eye-witness ac
counts of the crash. A hearing on
the technical phases of the crash
will be held later.
Meanwhile, in Washington the
possibility of pilot asphyxiation was
reported to be under consideration
in connection with the crash.
A recording of the pilot’s final
broadcasts showed that he shouted
“fire” and said he was releasing
carbon dioxide (fire extinguisher)
in the front cargo hold.
After various tests, the CAB has
advised airline pilots to wear oxygen
masks when releasing C02 fire ex
tinguishers in fuselage compart
ments such as cargo holds.
