Fractional gains were posted for a number of carrier issues while the balance of the market jogged along over narrowly uneven price route. Trading got off to a fairly lively start but later dwindled to the point of apathy. Business in th6 rails ac counted for a large share of the day’s activity. Higher prices were paid Union Pacific, Chesapeake & Ohio, Balti more & Ohio, Northern Pacific. St. Paul, Bethlehem Steel, Youngstown Sheet, Caterpillar Tractor, enith Radio and American Can. On the minus side were Consoli dated Natural Gas, Du Pont, Stand ard Oil of New Jersey, Gulf Oil and Loew's. Nickel Plate retreated a little under profit taking sales after a recent sharp advance. Solar Aircraft moved ahead in the Curb. The company just reported a net income of $800,967 for the year ended April, compared with a net loss of $509,065 in the preceding year. Also ahead were Sterling Aluminum Products, McCord Corp. and Cities Service. Washington Exchange SALES. Potomac Electric Power 3.80 pfd "A"— to at 48. Potomac Electric Power common—50 at 13**. July 6 opi—Corn broke the 8-cent daily limit during the morning ses sion at the Board of Trade today. The July contract was under consider able pressure most of the morning and shortly before noon sold for 2.04(*. after a sharp continuation of Saturday's long liquidation. Wheat also was weak on reports of record over-the-hollday receipts at Kansas, where 4.578 cars broke the previous mark for three days set July 5. 1938. when 3,579 cars were received. One of the Influences In the decline of July corn was the excellent progress the present crop is making. One broker said the conditions for a record crop could not be better. The market was under pressure of scattered liquidation partly reflecting evening-up operations in nearby July, prompted by the continued slow' export demand for old crop cotton sup plies. Some selling was predicated on high cotton acreage ideas, which centered around a figure of 24.000,000 acres, com pared with 21.500.000 planted last year. The Government cotton acreage report will be issued on Thursday of this week There was some fair trade selling in nearby October and December, which deal ers attributed partly to hedging opera tions against new crop commitments.
