Reports No War Talk
Behind Iron Curtain

BALTIMORE, July 6—Residents
of Warsaw and Prague seemed “well
fed and contented” to Dr, Sylvan i
M. Shane, Baltimore specialist in
anesthesiology who has just re
turned from a trip behind the “iron
curtain.”
He said last night he found no
signs of a "reign of terror” in Rus
sia-dominated Czechoslovakia and
Poland,
Furthermore, he said, all the talk:
of impending war he heard while;
on a tour of medical centers of;
Europe and Egypt was west of the
iron curtain.
He found no evidence of “repres
sion, suppression or depression,” in
Prague and Warshaw, he reported.
People Reported Happy.
He found a “happy people and an
apparently healthy economy” in
Eastern Europe, he said, adding:
"I didn’t see any evidence of
censorship. American publications
were for sale on the newsstands. My
phone calls home were not inter
rupted and my letters were not
opened.” .
He said doctors in Czechoslovakia,
where medicine is socialized and
physicians work on a state salary,
have opportunity to establish pri
vate practices on the side. He said
he heard no complaints from them.
Another Baltimorean just re
turned from Hungary, Albert Simon,
who did volunteer relief work for
the American Friends Service com
mittee, said the intelligensia and
aristocracy of that *ountry are
pessimistic, but that the mass of
the Hungarians have hopes for the
future.
Indirect Form of Censorship.
, Mr. Simon, who served as “chief
I of mission” for the committee, said
that Hungarians are "more inter
! ested in an economic democracy and
less is said about a political
democracy.”
He described an indirect form of
; press censorship which he said is
j very effective.
Although there is no direct cen
| sorship in Hungarian newspapers or
| magazines, every employes of a
! printing establishment must belong
to the Workers Party, a merger of
the left-wing Social Democrats and
the Communist Party.
“If they don't want to print any
thing, they simply say it s facist,”
j Mr. Simon said.
Scripts of all radio programs must
be submitted in advance for possible
| censorship, he related.
He said travel is unrestricted and
| Hungarians have complete freedom
I of religious worship.
Charles Edison Backs
Dewey for President

WEST ORANGE, N. J., July
Charles Edison, former Democratic
Governor of New Jersey and former
Secretary of the Navy under the late
President Roosevelt, announced yes
terday he would vote for Gov
Dewey, Republican candidate for
President.
The one-time Republican, who en
tered the Roosevelt administration
during the late President’s first term
and soon became a voting Democrat,
said in a statement:
"Our governmental house is choked
with litter and rubbish. It needs a
thorough house cleaning from top to
bottom. Changing one man won’t do
the trick. We must have a complete
change of management.”
The son of the inventor, Thomas
Edison, continued:
“The-two-party system was evolved
to accomplish just that. Now is the
time to put it into operation. There
are no streams and no horses to
worry us now. There will never be
a better time to change. For the
welfare of the Nation I intend to
vote for Dewey.”
Mr. Edison, who served as Gov
ernor from 1941-44. broke almost im
mediately on taking office with the
then Mayor Frank Hague of Jersey
City, State Democratic leader.
Mr. Edison took cognizance of Mr.
Hague’s action yesterday in Asbury
Park in swinging the New Jersey
Democratic delegation from Presi
dent Truman to Gen. Eisenhower.
Mr. Edison said: “Frank Hague's
political double-cross of the Presi
dent of the United States again
points up the domination of the
Democratic Party by the worst po
litical elements of our country.”

Policeman Hides in Sun, Flags
Down Pilot for Reckless Flying

PONTIAC. Mich., July 6.—Lurking
in the sun like a traffic policeman
behind a billboard, State Police
Trooper Henry A. Delooff yesterday
flagged down and ticketed an errant
flyer.
The arrested man, Marine Pfc.
Richard J. Koester, 20, on leave from
his station in Washington, paid a
$30 fine to Justice Burt I. Lockwood.
The charge was reckless flying.
Trcoper Delooff said he watched
Pvt. Koester take off “like a cow
boy’’ from the Pontiac airport. The
officer took over another plane and

He said the Marine made two low
dives over populated areas. After
the second one, the trooper pulled
up beside Pvt. Koester and gave
him the same signal traffic police
use to flag motorists to a curb.
“You should have seen his face
when I flew alongside him,” the
trooper commented.
Pvt. Koester was arrested after
he landed.

Mr. Dreux said a sudden shift in
the wind, coupled with the jamming
of a rope in a pulley, caused the
aluminum craft to overturn. The
wind was sharp and the sea heavy.
The three had sailed from the
Dunes Club. Lifeguards from the
club rowed out in one dory as a
second put out from the nearby
Canonchet Beach Club and Corpl.
Albert G. Busby of State police, who
saw the upset as he drove along the
shore road, put out in a third dory
from a nearby fishing dock.

Heart Attack Takes Life
Of D. C. Woman at Beach
Mrs. Gertrude V. Wooley, 55. of
the 3800 block of Davis place N.W.
died of a heart attack yesterday on
a swimming trip at Annapolis Roads.
Anne Arundel County police' said
Mrs. Wooley became ill while in the
water and walked to the beach be
fore losing consciousness. She was
pronounced dead at Annapolis Hos
pital.
