Those Imitation Oklahomans Keep Their Zest in 6th Year By Joy Carmody Someone could write a funny skit—say for a smart television revue when television becomes that smart—about a critic trying to w'rite some thing about ‘‘Oklahoma!” midway during its sixth year. The fact is that there is nothing to say about "Oklahoma!” in its sixth year except that it is back in Washington. The conventions of journalism are not satisfied with any such minimal statements, even wnen' they include the added words that the operetta is at the National and that this is the New York company. Actually, it makes no difference that this is the New York company, the one that closed the musical’s famous Broadway run after 2,248 performances. All “Oklahoma!” companies look pretty much alike, bright and shining and more dy namic than any equivalent sets of actual Oklahomans ever were. Real Sooners—which sounds funny, but that is what Oklahomans are called; —have their moments of relaxing, letting down and thinking that it honestly is one—of a morning. The Theater Guild’s paid imita tions of Oklahomans are the ones who are not allowed to taper off. Every night for nearly six years they * have stood in the middle of Lemuel Ayers’ bright golden haze on the meadow and sung. “Oh, what a beautiful morning.” Before the song is ended, the illusion is es tablished. Apparently, it never will be other wise, but this is no help to the poor devils who must occasionally write about “Oklahoma!” * TAKE YOUR COAT OFF . . . • PUT ON AN APRON . . . • A NAPKIN 'ROUND YOUR NECK . . . This would be something to write about, not much, but a kind of sad little joke at "Oklahoma's'’ expense. Nothing of the kind ever hap pens. ’’Oklahoma!” just keeps on1 going as it always has, and prob ably always will. Crowds keep coming to see it and going away after 11 o’clock saying how awful it would have been to have missed it. or not to have seen it again. This time the seeing is with Edith Gresham as Aunt Eller, Carolyn Tanner as Laurey, Wilton Clary as Curly, and Jacqueline Daniels as Ado Annie. There are ever so many others as all those other simulated Oklahomans who are better known to America than any equivalent group of real citizens of that State. But the fact remains that there Is nothing to write about them except that they will be here for three weeks and that it would be silly of you not to see them during that time. * * * * If things work out as T. Riggs' latest dramatic composi tion is called by the unusual title, “Verdigris Primitive," but it has al most an identical background. Moreover, its theme is not too dis similar, namely that the mo6t con servative humans must reconcile ■ themselves to progress and change. If “Verdigris Primitive” turns out ! to be a hit, Rodgers and Hammer 1 stein jmay get around some day to | setting it to music. It looks like a natural sequel to j “Oklahoma!” and maybe it would1 not run so long that critics would I be left speechless by it. * * * * 20th Century-Fox studios is taking no chance with the enormous po tential for confusion in Margery Sharp's title, “Brittania Mews.” Company executives can just imag ine what potential moviegoers might think if they ever saw that combination, of words on a theater marquee. Accordingly, they have decided that Miss Sharp’s witty and suc cessful story shall be marketed in, this country under the far simpler! 1 title, “The Affairs of Adelaide." The same sort of thinking works ■ both ways, of course. Metro-Gold wyn-Maver and Producer-Director Frank Capra were not going to be caught with such a strictly Ameri can title as “State of ,the Union” in ►marketing that picture in England. It was perfect for this country, but fcr#England they chose to call the j satirical comedy, “The World and ; His Wife.” That may-not be precisely defi nitive of the story written by How ard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, but it could not possibly be so discour- j aging to the English moviegoer mind as such a combination of words as “State of the Union.” It all goes to show that common languages are far less common than you realize if you are not a motion picture magnate.
