Vocabulary Builder.
Several readers have asked for a
sensible definition of the word cartel.
"The dictionary definition is vague
and confusing, and doesn’t seem to
fit the way the word is being used
nowadays in editorials and news
dispatches,” says Mrs. C. W. of
Kansas City.
Cartel, as the word is used today,
is rather new to most of us; but it
is an old familiar word in Europe.
Of its several meanings, only one
is pertinent to this article.
Briefly, a cartel is a pool or mo
nopoly for regulating prices, output,
sales territory, etc., within a given
industry.
Let us say that the A. corpora
tion of England, the B. corporation
of France and the C. corporation of
Germany control the output of
chinaware in their respective coun
tries. They enter into an agreement
that all three will sell their goods
at the same price; that the world
market will be divided among them
into three exclusive territories; that
they will trade manufacturing proc
esses and other valuable informa
tion.
In short, they establish a cartel.
The word is pronounced; kahr
TELL.
In the United States such com
bines between American concerns
are regarded as trusts or pools in
restraint of trade, and vigorous
laws (antitrust legislation) have
been passed to do away with them.
