WAVE Commander,
Assigned Here in War,
Slain on Seattle Street

SEATTLE, July 15.—A 41-year
old lieutenant commander in the
WAVES, Margaret Jones, senior
WAVES commander for the 13th
Naval District, was shot and killed
half a block from her home as she
left for work yesterday.
Vernon Allen. 42, was in critical
condition in Harborview County
Hospital with a bullet wound in the
head.
Detective Austin Seth of the
Seattle police homicide detail said
Miss Jones’ roommate, Esther Jones
tnot a relative), gave this account
of the shooting:

just getting into their car when

tripped crossing the lawn. Allen
walked over and shot again.
Then, Esther said, he walked
back into the street and shot him
self in the head.
Allen dropped out of the Univer
sity of Washington summer sclfool
recently. Esther said Margaret had
relected a proposal by him.
The 13th Naval District said Lt.
Comdr. Jones was the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. William Jones of
Spokane, and that she was a junior
high school teacher in .Seattle be
fore entering the Navy.
Assigned to Office Here.
Comdr. Jones was assigned to the
Navy Hydrographic Office here from
December, 1942 to August, 1946. As
assistant to the personnel • officer,
she was in charge of all enlisted
WAVES and she also served as
liaison officer between the Hydro
graphic Office, the Navy Bureau of
Personnel and the WAVE barracks.
When she was transferred to the
West Coast in 1946 she was given a
letter of appreciation for outstanding
performance of her duties, according:

jr., of Roanoke, Va. .said the child
had been baptized a Lutheran.
The court proceedings involved
the custody of Beverly Carol Katz
enstein, whose parents were married
in 1942 and divorced three years
later.
Judge Niles said he saw no rea
son "in infancy to disturb the
mother’s viewpoint that the child
should be a Lutheran,” and com
mented that the child would event
ually make up her own mind.
