Judy Garland’s Illness Sets
Astaire-Rogers Reunion Stage ■
By Joy Carmody
It is a possibility, yea even a likelihood, that Fred Astaire and Ginger
Rogers will be reunited in another musical, at which business they once
were the movies most popular team.
Hollywood, however, is more perturbed by the cause than the effect
of any such reunion.
If Miss Rogers does be come Astaire’s dancing partner in "The
Barkley* or Broadway at Metro
Goldwyn-Mayer, it will be because
Judy Garland cannot continue in
the role. Miss Garland is quite an
ill young actress, and while the
seriousness of her condition is
variously reported, it is almost cer
tain that she will have to take a
rest of at least three to six months
from further movie chores.
The strains to which Miss Garland
has been subjected since her re
covery from a break-down last year
—evident in the photography of
“Easier Parade"— has been greatly
too much.
Her condition has been one of
Hollywood's really deep worries for
some time, with the extreme pos
sibilty that she might be forced to
abandon her movie career alto
gether.
The chief worrier over her con
dition, of course, is M-G-M, her em
ploying studio.
Metro is deeper In talent than any
other studio in Hollywood, but it
has no replacement for Miss Gar
s, land, one of the few true “naturals"
on the screen. Over a period of
10 years, she has been the most con
sistent of the big box-office draws
on a studio payroll which includes
such outstandingly popular actresses
as Greer Garson, Deborah Kerr,
June Allyson, Katharine Hepburn
and a number of others.
Her contract is one of the most
valuable properties in Hollywood
ahd her loss to the studio over any
long period would be a heavy one.
If M-G-M cannot get the services
of Mias Rogers, now head of her own
Independent producing group, it

might well consider Ann Miller as
Judy’s replacement. No girl in the
movies can dance as well and look
so beautiful at. the same time, and
she certainly proved her competence
as Astaire’s partner In "Easter
Parade.”
And, if Metro would like to think
of it, no such talented and stunning
a girl ever has had a harder time
really getting established as the top
flight star she deserves to be.

Washington, which has provided
Hollywood with some of its liveliest
and most violent screen scripts. Is
about to come up with still another
—this one with no less a popular
star than Alan Ladd. “Postal In
spector” is the title of the film
which will be made by Paramount.
As the title makes clear, It is the
story of Postofflce Department acti
vities, on which writers Ardel Wray
and Robert L. Richards have been
working for some time.
Much of the action will be filmed
against a Washington background
as in the case of several Treasury
and FBI screen features.
Ladd is expected here for legation
shooting. If the news gets around,
it ought to make work for the
camera crew, actors and director a
bit more difficult than if the pic
ture were produced altogether in
Hollywood.

The Marx brothers usually are
teamed up with large, rugged wom
en In their screen comedies but
i no matter what happens, the
brothers will work with three more
glamorous and fragile types In
"Blondes Up,” their current under
taking.
Leading the trio of beauties will
be Marion Hutton, sister of Betty
: tthe Huttons are rugged), with such
associates as Ilona Massey and
Vera Ellen. The latter is the small
ish dancer-comedienne who was
taken to Hollywood by Producer
; Sam Goldwyn after seeing her per
form in the stage musical, "The
Connecticut Yankee.”
Not the original "Yankee,” to be
sure, but the revival of three or
four years ago.

RKO studios, known as "Ulcer

chased control and laid off more
than 300 employes, has no intention
of closing down as angry Holly

of less costly films, and an array of
short subjects.
Heading the immediate projects

for "Easter Parade” and "The Em

Hollywood:
Mason Would Do
“Hornblower”
At Warners
By Sheilah Graham
Jsfmes Mason, they tell me at
j Warners, Is interested in starring
! for them in “Captain Horatio Horn
blower.” I hope so, because Mason
hasn’t made any pietures for more
j than a year, and he is too excellent
jan actor to remain idle so long.
Yvonne De Carlo has a romantic
rendezvous coming up in London,
j “I’ll be meeting Carlos Anthony in
London, at the end of July,” Yvonne
tells me at the Universal-Interna
tional Studio. Carlos is Yvonne’s
I long-time Canadian lumber ad
mirer. “Will you marry him?” I
want to know. Yvonne does not
think so—because such a marriage
would be too tough “with me living
in Hollywood and he working in
Canada.”
Bob Hope is back at Paramount
to do added scenes for “Sorrowful
; Jones.”
Sydney Greenstreet won’t be
making any more pictures, by order
of his doctor, until his high blood
pressure comes down a bit. And
Sydney also has to slim down a
bit, to be really healthy.
* * * *
The Van Johnsons are beginning
to worry their closest friends. I
know how desperately anxious they
both are to make a success of their
marriage, so I hope they can
straighten out the cause of their
difficulty. •
Margaret O’Brien’s mother took
me into Maggie’s dressing room, and
said, “look”—and showed me her
daughter's hair under the wig she
wears for “Little Women.’’ It’s quite
short, and Mrs. O'Brien said it was
burned off through too much iron
waving in Maggie’s last two pic
tures. And she doesn't like it at
all. Well, one thing is sure—it will
grow back again. Maggie has plenty
of time.
Lawrence Tierney’s brother, the
new star, Scott Brady, is now go
ing places with Cathy Downs. I
| predict that, after "Canon City,”
Scott will be as big a star as Larry.
Scott looks quite different from his
more famous brother.
Perry Oomo is on his way to New
York and when he returns to his
home in Hollywood, he will have
an adopted youngster in tow.
Anne Baxter is having trouble
with’her ears. And the loud gunfire
on the “Yellow Sky” set doesn’t
help any.
Burt Lancaster will be that dar
ing young man on the flying trapeze
when he takes off on his planned
vaudeville tour. Burt is going to
do an act he performed during his
circus days, and now he is prac
ticing on a trapeze every day be
tween takes of his latest picture,
i“Criss Cross.”

Sonja Henie will meet her Swedish
royal admirer, Count Bernadotte,
when she gets to London next week.
Before she left here, Sonja locked
up most of $1,000,000 Jewel collec
tion In a Los Angeles bank vault.
She was quite scared because of
that near burglary a couple of
weeks ago, and during her last week
here she slept with a gun under
her pillow and floodlights on outside
her house all night.
Ann Sothern planning her fourth
vacation in Sun Valley.
Ida Lupino’s marriage delay to
Collier Young was explained to me
by Collier. “We’re going to wait,”
said he, “until the plastering and
other work on my new house are
finished. It would be too difficult
otherwise, with bits of ceiling falling
into our grapefruit!” He assures
me that the marriage will take
place.
Ann Sheridan’s great friend and
adviser. Steve Hannagan, called me
from Connecticut to say that the
only way Annie can get out of her
current Warner contract is to “buy
her way out. And that,’* says
Stevie, ’Is economically ridiculous,
because she has five more months
to go anyway.” He adds that, mean
while, Ann will be glad to work for
Warners, "if they send her a decent
script.”
Johnny Weissmuller, who quit the
Tarzan series when his waistline
spread, is now working madly on his
figure at the OJai Valley Inn. He.
plans to lose 20 pounds in 30 days
for a new movie series. "Jungle Jim.”
By exercising all day long, Johnny
has shed 11 pounds in the last week.

Lucille Gets Role
Lucille Ball will return to the RKO
Radio studio where for seven years
she was under contract after her
discovery as a Goldwyn girl, for
a co-starring role in “Interference.”
In this Irwin Shaw story with a
background of professional football,
her dramatic role will contrast with
most of her screen appearances as
a comedienne. *
Miss Ball's last appearance at
RKO Radio was in 1942 as co-star
with Henry Fonda in the late Damon
Runyon’s production of “The Big
Street.” She recently completed a
stellar role in “Her Husband’s
Affairs” at Columbia and in “Sor
rowful Jones” at Paramount.
From the Stage
W. E. Watts is assigned to the
direction of RKO Radio's “Follow
Me Quietly.” Like Nicholas Ray
and Joseph Losey, directors respec
tively of “The Twisted Road” and
“The Long Denial,” he won his spurs
on the Broadway stage.
Watts directed Jane Cowl and
the late Leslie Howard in several of
their stage successes. Before com
ing to Hollywood, he directed a
number of documentary film* for
the United 8tates Government.
Kent Smith has the starring role
ta “Follow Ms Quietly." 1
